Abstract: (Authors' Hungarian summary] The more important screening methods Tn-itrate tests, TTC test, etc.) used in quantitative bacteriology involving the urine are surveyed and the results of comparative studies, using these methods, are reported. Significant bacteriuria was correctly indicated by the simple Gries-Ilosvay type of nitrite test in 55 per cent, by the Sleight type modification of the nitrite test and by the 6troke plate technique in 98.5, and by the TTC test in 90 per cent of the cases. The combination of a chemical-test and of a semiquantitative culture procedure is considered to be the most suitable method. 3 Hungarian, 30 Western references. (Regul irovka obogreva koksovykh pechey po vY80te) 68-1-6/21 PERIODICAL: Koks i Khimiya, 1957, No-') pp. 19 - 2- (USSR) ABSTRACT: Factors influencing the height and dimension of flame in heating flues and therefore directly influencing the uni- formity of heating along the height of ovens were investigated. These factors are: a) the velocity of gas flow at the entr- ance to heating flues; b) coefficient of air excess, and c) calorific value of gas used for heating. When investigating one of the above factors the remaining factors were kept con- stant. The uniformity of heating along the height of ovens was determined by measuring femperatures in the tar line at three levels (0.6, 2.1 and 3 m fr6m the oven sole), temperatures of bottom, top and along the height of heating flues. The latter was done by measuring the temperature of a nickel plate immersed to various depths in the flue. From final temperatures in the tar line the weighted mean coke temperatures were calculated by planimetering reSDective diagrams. Ovens of the type M-42 and M-49 on the Magnitogorsk Combine (Magnitogorskiy Kombinat) were the object of investigation. The influence of the gas-air stream velocity at the entrance to heating flues was studied on Card 1/3ovens of thetIK-49 type, fired with blast furnace gas with 3% Qontrol...of Heating Uoice Ovens Along Their Height. 68-1-6/21 consumption of heat) the temperature of the lower zones of heating flues increases (Fig. 3). A large number of experimental results obtained during the investigation permitted the deriving of statistical relationship between the'temperature of control heating flues and the temperature-of the coke (Fig.4). In the temperature range: 1 300 to 1 340 OC on the pusher side and 1 340 to 1 380 'JC on the coke side, the relationship is linear. An increase of temwerature of a control heating flue by 10 0C increases the mean te9 erature in the tar line by 36 OC on the pusher side and by 32 C on the coke side. It is pointed out that increase in tem-Perature is non-uniform; the temperature of the bottom part oif-the cokc--increases most. There are 4 figures and 2 t-ables. TITLE: Smokeless Charging of Coke Ovens (Bezdymnaya zagruzka koksovykh pechey) PERIODICAL: Koks i Khimiya, 1959, Nr 67 pp 2~-31 (USSR) ABSTRACT: In 1955 VUEhIN developed a method of smokeless charging of coke ovens with two collecting mains. The basic deficiency of the method was a decraase in the weight of the charge and an increase in the ash content of tar due to carry over of -the coal dust during steam injection. In 1957-58 VUKhIN in co-operation with the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine investigated various methods of charging ovens in order to improve the technology of charging. The main attention was directed towards decreasing the amount of dust. carried over into the collecting mains. The characteristi-,, fea-hti-res of the methods tested are shown in Table 1 andtbe dependence of concentration of dust in the gas in ascension Dipes on the moisture content and the content of particles below 50 F in the blend in Fig 1. The best results were Card 1/2 obtained when charging was oarried out in two stages; sov/68-,:~ -6-712-5 Smokeless Charging of Coke Ovens 59 first through two outside holes simultaneously or in turn charging 12.9 tons (without levelling) and then after 15 - '15 minutes, through the middle hol e (3-3 t) and levelling. Under these conditions the carry over of dust into the Qollecting mains was the lowest, (9.8'~) -- 11.8 kg/over,). The method can be used at a moistl-~re content up to 7. 1,5e . lo and with the injection of steam arc~)rdJng to the VUIChIN-1,94K scheme (Fig 6). The use of vibrating filter screens for the removal of suspended ma'ter fi-om. tar was tested with satisfax.-Ac)ry results (no details) and w l ill be incorporated into the operation practice. on the M4K plant.
