AUTHOR: S,rdyukov V.G. Engineer 130-12-6/24
TITLE: Elimination of Flame Pulsation When Burning Blast-furnace
Gas in Cowper Stoves (Likvidatsiya Dullsatsii fakela, pri
szhiganii domennogo gaza v vozdukhonagrevatelyakh)
PERIODICAL: Metallurg, 1957, No.12, pp. 11 - 13 (USSR).
ABSTRACT: The author describes the failure of the stoves on No.3
furnace at the imeni Voroshilov (imeni Vorozhilov.~) Works to
take their rated ges flow. The furnace is 1 386 m' in useful
volume and is served by three stoves 8.5 m. in diam2ter and 4? m,
high with a semi-circular combustion chamber 4.5 m in section.
and 145 m 3 in volume. Strong pulsations'of the flame prevented
the type L43TM burners beinE~ used at the full firing rates. The
reconstructions by which this bottleneck was eliminated are
described and said to be similar to those reported to have been
carried out at the Tiestfahlenhutte Works in W. Germany.

TITLE: On the Orientation of Aerial Surveying on the Topographical
Stereometer Towards Four Points
PERIODICAL: Geodeziya i kartografiya, 1959, Nr 10, pp 29-31 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: At present, the height of air surveying is referred to as the
principal point of the air photograph,.and the base line is
calculated on the scale of the principal point. Since in
joining the air photographs are oriented towards four points,
on a topographical stereometer, the necessary data are missing
at the junction point. Upon suggestion of G. D. Krasheninnikov
(Ref 1, Footnote on p 2.0) air photographb are oriented here
by two approximations. Another method of orienting air photo-
graphs towards four poAnts is applied by the Ukrainskoye
aerogeodezicheskoye predpriyatiye (Ukrainian Aerogeodetical
Organization). It is described in thig-article. The difference
in elevation between the fourth point and the principal point
is defined by formula (1). The elevation of the principal
point is then calculated. This elevation is regarded as initial
elevation. This method has the advantage that in orientation

point. Thus, orientation is done more rapidly. In orienting
air photographs towards four points by means of the STD-2
stereometer three approximations are to be used. This is
exemplified here. The method described here was checked by
V. L. Malyshevskiy, head of the brigade which is charged with
stereometric tasks in the aforementioned organization. Here-
from it followed that good reBuLts can b"e obtained by the
method. It increases efficiency and'improves the interpreta-
tion of air photographs. There are 2 figures, 1 table, and

IMRI Device for profile plotting aocording'to aerial photographs
PERIODICAL- Referativnyy zhurnal, Mashinostroyeniye, no. 20, 1961, 27, abstract
2OZh250'("Transp. str-vo", 1961, no. 1, 43-45)
The author reports on an electronic device, developed at the Kiyev-
skiy inzhenermo-stroitellnyy institut (Kiev Construction Engineering Institute),
for the automatic plotting of a track profile based on aerial photographs. The
device is made in the form of an attachment to the CTA-2 (STD-2) topographic
stereometer. After setting the measuring mark on the initial track point and
orienting the photographs according to the altitude points, the pencil of the
coordinate recorder maps out the profile. The practical accuracy of the device
is of such a kind that the FM error does not exceed + 1.6 m.

TRANSLATION: The author describes an instrument for the direct tracing of a- -ji
line of given elevation over a stereoscopic model of the terrain. The instru-
ment is an attachment for the STD- tereometer.,o The basic sub-assemblies of
the instrument are a stereometer wi a foot disc, a path pickup, an electronic.
amplifier, a computer, a coordinatograph, and electromechanical converters and a i "5;
parallax hood. During measurements of the stereomodel, the path and elevation
carriages move automatically over the coordinatograph, automatically charting the

pickup thro~xgh the electronic amplifier and the electromechanical converter.
The elevation carriage is moved by means of a computer. The path pickup is

,travel of the mark over the stereomodel, bhe measuring roller moves over an serial'

PERIODICAL: Fizika v shkole, 1959, Nr 2, p 71 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The device consists of a glass tube, 5 to 15 mm in diameter
and 240 to 400 mm long, with a tight piston inside. Four
or five drops of ether or alcohol (depending on the diameter
of the tube) and a little mercury are put into the tube.
The piston is lubricated with glycerin to reduce friction
and placed into the tube. Between the piston and the tube
a wire, 0-5 mm ir. diameter, is put. Air may escape through
the opening thus permitting to put the piston in the proper
place. The wire is then removed, and the tube fastened to
a stand with the closed end upwards. When slowly lowering
the piston, the space occupied by vapor will increase. The
evaporation of the ether begins and soon the entire liquid

tube becomes unsaturable. 71hen pushing the piston back into
the tlubeq a reverse process takes place: the unsaturable
vapors of ether will become saturated and as the volume
gets smaller a part of the vapors turns into liquid. On
the piston there appears a layer of ether. There is 1 diagram.

Strength of Cylindrical Shells (Cont. ) SOV/2276
According to the author the simultaneous action of an axial ten-
sile stress and external pressure has not been thoroughly analyzed.
He considers'a thin, circular, closed shell under torsion. Other
loads produce a momentless stressed state. The expressiorlsof
stresses and deformations are git7en.
Darevskiy, V.M. Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells Under
Flexure by a Transverse Force Combined With Torsion and Internal
Pressure .72
In this article, the results of the author's former work are
used to simplify the evaluation of the stability of c,-lindrical
shells under the simultaneous action of torsional moments, in-
ternal pressure and transverse rim forces. The author describes
conditions under which the evaluation of the stability of the
shell may be determined by simple formulaz. The above analysis
is applicalbe to the calculation of combustion chambers of jet
engines.

The author is concerned with natural vibrations of near-cylin-
