preparing for expansion of the multiple well drilling
method in their respective regions. The authors state
that the increased impDrtance of multiple well drilling
calls for a more thorough analysis of the problems raised
by M. G. Osipov and A. A. Kortatstsi in their article
published in Neftyanoye khozyaystvo, 195T, Nr 8. The
authors also note that the effect of multiple well
drilling through level type formations had been studied
at the Moskovskiy neftyanoy institut Im. akad. - .
I. M. Gubkina (Moscow Petroleum institute im. Acad.
I. M. aubkin) by V. P. Banatov, G. I. Zhukova,
L. G. Kasatkina, and N. L. Kolyubakin under the guidance
of E. I. Tagiyev and F. F. Dunayev. Drilling data pro-
vided by the'Allmetlyevbu~rneftl and Tatbuirneft' of the
Tatar ASSR show that the multiple well drilling method
produces better results than the vertical-well drilling
method (Tables 1-3). Fig. I presents a well distribution
scheme for multiple well.drilling at the Yuzhno-.
Romashkino oilfield of the Tatar ASSR. This scheme will
be used for oil well drilling during the Sixth Five Year
Plan. Tables 4-6 show that the drilling of multiple

wells according to this scheme of well distribution
will lead to a reduction in capital investment and
to a desirable decrease in time and labor consumption.
The authors conclude that: 1) drilling clusters of
dual wells through level type formations will reduce
capital investment, labor and metal consumption, 2)
the accumulated data on dual well drilling and on the
operation of clusters of inclined wells a level type
formations make it possible to recommend an expansion
of this type of drilling, and 3) wide application of
dual well drilling depends on the development of special
drilling and operating equipment, and on the solution
of individual technological problems. There are 6 tables

Abstract: On the basis of field and vegetative experiments conducted by
the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Hydraulic Engin-
eering and Melioration, it is recomnended that from 500-700 kg-/
hectare of copper cinder be applied twice per rotation on peaty-
ashy-calciferous-ferrous soils and on hypno-sedge grass soils
which are not subject to flooding; on peaty-calciferous-siliceous

TEXT: In order to forecast the wind at high altitudes as required by the
development of high-speed hiVh-altitude aviation, it is necessary first to fore-
cast the absolute potential of isobaric surfaces. Meteorological services in
many countries are compiling 500-mb and 300-mb prognostic charts. Various
methods of compiling these charts have been tested by the Tsentrallnyy institut
prognozov (Central Institute of Weather Forecast). The testing utilized current
materi, als from 22 days in April and 25 days in May 1959. Twenty-four hour

prognostic charts were compiled for most of Europe, a large part of Western
Siberia, and Kazakhstan. Values of H 5,oand H 300 were precomputed by the
correlation method, the method of tran er of relative geopotential along ab -
.solute Isohypses, and the method of transfer of relative geopotential. along
B500 isolines, for some 48-50 points within this area. The accuracy of the
forecasts thus obtained for the altitudes of isobaric surfaces was evaluated
for all of these 48-50 points, while the accuracy of wind forecasts was evalu-
ated for the 300-mb isobaric surface only, and at only 10 points (Stockholm,
Leningrad, Murmansk, Syktyvka-r, Sverdlovsk, Omi~k, Moscow, Kiyev, Warsaw,
and Stalingrad). Analysis of the test results leads to the following conclusions:
1) A better forecast of H5oO 0 and H (. i. e. , a smaller mean square error)
100 500
is obtained by the_rnethod of transferring H-51&000 along the B500 isolines, than
by transferring H500 Along the 700-mb absolute isohypses. 2) In forecasting

The Laboratoryfbr Petroleum Refining at the Geological Institute of Mineral
Resources, Llvov Branch of UkrSSR, developed a new rethod for ar-alyis of the
chemical group composition of acid asphalts obtained from the refining of, Gil and
wax. This method serves forthe determination of 'the compositon of all types of
acid asphalts, and can be conveniently used in plant laboratories. It intro-
duces new elements into asphalt analysis: more complete quantitative analysis of
organic components, especially of paraffinic acid,..aspahlts (for the first time),
determination of carboxylic acids (naphthenic and asphaltous), determination of
T1 oxonitm" compounds of resins and asphaltenes as independent from tile varicus
groups of asphaltene-sulfonic acids, and the discovery of the hitherto unknown

ABSTRACT: For the simultaneous photography of Mar and Deimos with their
surrounding stars, a square or hexagonal aperture was installed in front of the
lens. Due to diffraction, a redistribution of intensitv takes place in the image oi
the planet, radial rays appear perpendicular to the sides of the aperture and the
background around the edge of the picture of Mars is weakened, where the image
of the satellite is shown. In the beginning of 1963, approximately 50 photographs

of Allars with this satellite were obtained by this method at GAO AN UkrSSR, In
order to evaluate a possible systernatic observation error, the average devia-

tions of 'the arbitrary equations for Yarktur and 12 reference stars, obtained in
the p1hotographs during various positions of the telescope and the aper-ture were
coi-npared. The remaining deviations for Yarktur turned out to be prac.1,cally -ne
sairt,~. i~.s ,'or the reference stars. this makes it possible to conclude that the
aDerture does not cause any systematic shift of the bright star on the photographic
piate. It was proposed that the positions of the bright obliects be measured on ;the
YIAT- 22 equipment with the several intersecting hairlines in the microscope
which are directed towards the diffraction ravs. From five plates, 15 positions
of' Mars and Deimos were obtained in the Yell skiy system of catalog-des. The
average probable error of one pos:t;,on, calculated accordi-f to b--7 flne
discrepancy of individual measurements is equal to + Os, 007 and -'10". 09 in term$

pqsitions of brig_kt point objects from ray r-cieasurements is satisfactorily accurate

TITLE: Extraction of hydriodic acid from aqueous solutions and separation of zinc

ABSTRACT: Elements occurring in the same series are separated in the form of their
halide and rhodanide complexes by selective extraction. In this study the distrL-
butLon of hydrLodic acid and of zinc and cadmium iodide complexes between water
and oxygen-containing organic solvents was determined. By increasing the initial
concentration of Hi from 0.1 to 5.0 moles/l. its transfer to the organic phase of
the water-organLc solvent system is increased. The ability to extract HI increases
lin the following series of solventst isoamylacetate, dLethyl ether, isoamyl
jalcohol, butanol (beat extractant). The extracting ability of theee alcohol&

:parallels their dielectric constant. The distribution of zinc and cadmium iodide
~complexes (prepared from'aqueous solutions of the corresponding sulfates and KI)
between aqueous 112SO4-KI solutions and the following solvents was studied: isobut3L,
;alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, diethyl ether, isobutylacetate, methylbutyl ketone,
~'isoamyl acetate, and isoamylbenzoate. Increasing the acidity of the medium in-
creases the separation of Cd into the organic phase, e.g., in isoamyl alcohol the
.partition coefficient is increased from 1.42 in 0.05 M H2SO4 to 111.00 in 6 H acid.!
An analgous effect occurs with Zn, only to a much lesser degree, on extraction
with isoamyl alcohol, diethyl ether and methyl butylketone (from O.t2 in 0.05 M
,acid to 0.33 in 6 M acid in isoamyl alcohol). Extraction of the zinc iodide with
~tbe remaining organic solvents starts to increase with solutions 3 11 or higher in
:acid. The ability of the alcohols and of the complex ethers to extract cadmium
;iodide increases with an increase in the molecular weight of a given class of
,compounds. By extracting a Cd-Zn mixture with isoamyl alcohol and subsequently
itreating the extract with a 25% solution of a=onium rhodanide, Za-free Cd can be
!obtained even with an initial Zn:Cd ratio of 10:1# Orig& art. has: 4 tables.
