i'6.7-'7!TRACT: A study was made of the spectrum ~f the electron paramagnetic re-
sonance of Cr3+ ions in MgMO04 crystals, synthesized at atmospheric pressure,
at a frequency of 9. 4 megacycles at room temperature. The concentration of
chromium in the melt was approximately 0. 067a. The presence of five physically
non-equivalent systems of ions was established. Two of these (the so-called
basic ionic systems) had a sufficient intensity of resonance transitions and were
studied in detail. Experimental results indicate that MgMO04 crystals belong to
the monoclinic system and that their symmetry belong to one of the three point
groups: 2(C2), m(Cs), or 2/m W20. The results obtained were verified by X-ra'.

TITLE: Growing NaLa(Mo0i,)2 single crystals
SObRCE: AN SSSR. Izvestiya. Neorganicheskiye materialy, v, 2, no. 10. 1966, 1905
TOPIC TAGS: single crystal growth, molybdate, lanthanum compound, sodium compound,
laser effect, laset optic material
ABSTRACT: HaLa(MoO 4). single crystals were grown by Czochralski technique in a high-
frequency crystallizer in view of the laser effect, previously reported in Western
literature, in certain MIMIII(MVIO4)2 type compounds, where MI is an alkali metalj
MIII a rare-earth element and MVI is W or Mo. The starting material NaLa(Mo04)2'2H20
was synthesized by precipitation reaction of sodium molybdELte and lanthanum nitrate -
in solution. Pure NaLa(MO04)2 with MP = 1163C and scheelite structure was obtained by
calcining the hydrated product at 900C. The crystals up to 60 mm long and up to 12 =1
in diameter were grown from pure NaLa(MoO4)2 melt. The laser effect at a fairly low
generation threshold was observed at room temperature in NaLa(MO04)2 single crystals
activated with I at% Nd. The generation threshold may be significantly decreased in
the optically more perfect crystals. Orig. art. has: 1 figure. RKII

ABSTRACT: This article briefly describes methods of synthesizing single crystals of BaN1004
and presents the results of Investigating the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of Im
purity Ions Gd3+ In these crystals at room temperature at a frequency of about 9.3 Gc. The
parameters of the spin Hamiltonian describing the energy levels of the tons Gd3+ and the ob-
,served resonance spectrum are found. The data obtained are compared with results of Investi-, i
gating the EPR spectra of gadolinium in a series of geometrically similar molybdate crystals.
An investigation of the Isomorphism of Ions Gd3+ in tetragonal molybdates revealed that the
observed g-factors are low-antsotropic and identical (within limits of accuracy of the expert- I
ment) in all crystals of this group. The injection of tons Gd34 occurs in the some manner, un-

ABSTRU%CT: The promoting effect of Zr02 on the cobalt catalyst on a kieselguhr f
carrier in the synthesis of higher hydrocarbons from CO and H2 at atmospheric
presst~re was investigated in view of its similarity to Th02, a known prcmoter.
Of thiz preliminary catalysts investigated (Co-kieselguhr, Co-kieselguhr with Zr02
and C,'--MgO-kieselguhr with Zr02), the latter, containing MgO proved most active.
At 200-240 C after 300 hours operation without regeneration it still yielded
~1/m3 of hydrocarbons. Catalysts with-various component ratios were examined;:

depending on the length of time the catalyst was used, e.g., after the first 15
hours after catalyst preparation, at 190 C for 170 hours, the yield of higher
hydrocarbons was 111-125 gm/m3 with gasoline/oil ratio of 0.55; during the next
400 hours, the yield was 93.3 with 0.9 ratio. A similar catalyst prepared with
Th02 promocor instead of Zr02 yielded, after the first 20 hours, 105 gm/m of
product with gasoline/oil ratio of 0.45. Orig. art. has: 4 tables and I figure.

TEIC.r: Principles are described of the design of a computer for
synthesizing relay systems as designed at the Laboratory of Infor-
mation Transmission Systems of the AS USSR. The conditions which
the synthesizing computer should satisfy are set at a switch panel
in the form of inputs and outputs. The circuit diagram of the-panel
is set to test whether the given conditions can be realized and when
it shows that these conditions cannot be realized, it determim s the
minimum number of relays which have to be used for these conditions
to be realized. After this, various variants of the circuits are

number of switches or in which the given distribution of relay
switches has been obtained. The device design is based on the
graphical method of synthesizing siritching multiple-pole networks.
The final circuit is shown on a lamp register. 10 references.

TITLE: Training of Bees (Dressirovka pchel)
PERIODICAL: Nauka i Zhizn', 1957, # 9, p 20 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The article deals with the problem of pollinating plants by
bees which the latter, under ordinary circumstances, dislike and
avoid to visit. Scientists of the apiculture department at the
Moskva Academy of Agriculture imeni K.A. Timiryazev (Moskov-
skaya sellsko-khozyaystvennays akademiya imeni K.A. Timiryazeva)
discovered a method of making bees pollinate specially selected
areas by feeding them with sugar syrup infused with the scent
of the desired plant, e.g. - clover. When the bees have been
feeding on such syrup for a certain time, they change their
altitude and begin visiting clover fields they formerly disliked.
This kind of training bees is possible owing to the peculiarities
of the functioning of their nervous system which has been care-
fully studied by Soviet scientists.
