ABSTRACT: Results of field investigations of 20 Hungarian MOM Gi-BI Pcrrotheod0lites11,,-e
carried out in 1964 in several types of physicogeographic regions, at different times
of the day and in different kinds of weather (762 pointings and 27 check orientations
of direction), demonstrated that in a single pointing.direction orientation could be.
carried out with a mean square error of no more than 1:20" in 35--40 min. The instru-,
ments were reliable and easy to operate. Deficiencies In design noted during the
tests included the lack of provision for automatically following the reversion point
position and the overlong time (90 min) required by the power unit to warm up the in-
strument when low temperatures were encountered. These deficiencies were overcome
somewhat in the later models (Gi-B2) which were tested recently. Two experimental
models, field-tested over a period of 20 days at latitudes between 45 and 560, had
mean square errors of about '10" in single pointing-direction determination. The in-
struments were transported by automobile for a distance of about 3000 km and 2000 km

ABSTRACT: This paper reviews the photosensitive diazo compounds with particular re-
gard to their application in cartography. The author is motivated by
cited inadequacies of current photomechanical production methods for offset plates
and by the advantages offered by the diazo c(impounds. These advantages are; 1) a betJ
ter photosensitivity, comparea with chromateC, high molecular weight films 2) good
dark storage, 3)a large, controlled assortment of possible colors, 4) prospects of a
cheaper production of copies, 5) dry processing possibilities, and 6) superior opti-
cal resolving power. After a historical review starting with the classical diazo
compounds synthesized in 1858 by Griss, Fig. 1, and including the 1920 - 1930 develop.

nents, - a number of more recent diazo patents and references are briefly revie'Ked
and/or cited, and some USSR diazo componds described, including the derivativ'es of
paraaminodiphenylamine, %hich have found wider acceptance. The use of diazo compoundt
for the direct production of printing plates is then discussed. The article Ls closed
with a plea for more research on the synthesis and the investigation of useful proper
ties of diazo compounds and for their introduction into the map making industry. The

PERIODICAL: Plasticheskiye massyp no- 3P 1963; 27 - 30
TEXT.f! The effect of alcohols on the electrostatic charge forming on high-
dehsd-ty polyethylene (HDPE) was studied. Alcohols were obtained by oxo-
synthesis of unsaturated products of petroleum cracking. Oxyethylated al-
cohols had the general composition Cn EM, where Cn is the initial alcohol
with n C atoms, and E M is the number of ethylene oxide moles per alcohol
mole. The effect of the following substances was teste&t 0.2

PERIODICAL: Metallurg, 1959, Nr 10, PP 30-31 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Following the tasks set by the Seven Year Plan to step
up production of special-purpose steel, a team of young
workers (Morozov, N., Dubov, S., Gureyev, P,., Ushakov,
V., Shershavkin, N., Glazkov, S. and the authors) developed
a satisfactory method of working with a decreased content
of tungsten, vanadium, molybdenum, and other elements in
high-speed R18- and Rg-steels. High-melting components
of the charge including ferrotungsten settled in the
furnace heartj were thoroughly and rapidly molten by
intensive boiling of the bath at elevated temperatures.
Sequence of operations; (1) maximum transformer power

(1) melting period decreased 40 to 50 min; (2) saving in

tungsten loss. Cutters made of -T.18-steel with 17.5% W
(i.e. lowest permissible content) are not inferior to
cutters with 19% W. There are 2 tables.

The author reports the results of drug-resistance development in 105 cases of
cavitary pulmonary tb. followed during several months (average 8.4). From this
study it emerges that in tuberculous patients on antituberculous drug therapy the
changes occurring in the state of the pulmonary lesions or in the defensive state
of the body are invariably followed by changes in the formation of resistance.
Lowering of body defenses. stagnation or worsening of the pulmonary lesions
leads to accelerution of the tempo of resistance development. On the other hand.
improvement of the lesions may result In retardation of the development or poq-
sibly even in lowering of the level of resistance. Thus it is necessary that patients
with cavitary disease and positive sputum should be protected from stresses during
the therapy, and that improvement should be continuous in these patients. For
this aim drugs of secondary Importance should be resbrted to as well.

TITLE: Interferometer measurements of supersonic velocities in solid bodies
PERIODICAL: Mokslas ir tekhnika, no, 4, 1962, 34
TEXT: To establish the elasticity constants of solids two triangular rectangular prisms are fitted with a
quartz crystal and the solid being studied in a four-cornered prism. As electromagnetic waves are transmitted
through the crystal the position of the prisms in relation to each other is altered, producing standing waves.
The resonance moment may be registered by the electric current flowing through the quartz crystal, and the
supersonic velocity in the given body by the frequency of the electromagnetic waves (oscillatory) affecting
the crystal. The method is highly exact, with a relative error of the supersonic velocity of 0. 1 %, and extremely
convenient, as higher frequencies permit supersonic measurements in relatively small bodies. There is I
figure.
