The present author criticizes the above paper of V. V. Shuleykin and P. F. Sliakurov (Ref.1). Shuleykin and Shakurov photographed an emission spectrum of an incandescent lamp after passage through 10 km of air about 50 m above the sea surface. The beam from the lamp was not parallel and vras not focused on the spectrograph slit. The D-doublet of Na vras not resolved and it is hardly noticeable in Fig.1 of Ref.l. Shuleykin and Shakurov's paper does not give the essential experimental details such as the type of the spectrograph used, its resolving power, dispersion, parameters of the camera, etc. Their Card 112 calculation of line intensity and derivation of the B-032~ sov/!69-59-4-3830' Translation from: ReferativnTj zhurnal, Geofizika, 1959, Nr 4, P 95 (USSR) A(ZqIOR~ Shakurov, P.F, ANINOWN" 1----Q%xW-W-~ I'k TITLE.~ The Results of Measuring the Deflection of the Visible Horizon at Three Altitudes PERIODICAL: Tr. Morsk. g1drofiz. in-ta, AS USSR, 1957, Vol 11, PP 105 - Ill ABSTRACT., This is an investigation of the causes of errors in measuring the deflection of the visible horizon and their variations in dependence on the altitude of the observer's eye above the sea level. Test observations of the deflection of the horizon from three different altitudes (4.5, 19, 47.5 m) are described for various meteorological conditions. The following conclusions are drawn. 1) The lower the altitude of the observer's eye, the smaller the difference will be between observed and tabular deflections, corrected for the difference between water and air temperatures. 2) With low altitudes of the observer's eye, the fluctuation amolitudes of the observed deflection will be greater Card 1/2 in the general case, while --:he line of the horizon will be uneven 8039 SOV/169-5; 4-3836 The Results of Measuring the Deflection of the Visible Horizon at 11hree Altitudes and changeable, especially with a swell. 3) The difference between the observed and the tabular deflections will Increase (up to 5' - 6') during a period of intense heating and weakly developed advection; the difference will be greater for higher altitudes of the observer's eye. 4) The deflection of the horizon varies in its different sections; the difference amounts to 1, which apparently can be explained by the considerable difference in air and water temperatures when a wind of a certain direction is present. 5) The tabular values of the deflection of the visible horizon must be corrected in respect to the difference between water and air temperaLures, For the Black Sea, this correction must be performed only in January, April, June, July, August and September. Izves+-iya A-ademii Nauk SSSR.. It could be applied in registering the variations in the angle of inclination of the Earth's surface or similar movements. The principle of the apparatus is shown in Fig.la and Fig.2~ The disc D has a concave upper surface, being part of a sphere S , while the disc d has a convex Card 1/3 lower surface belonging to a sphere S1. Both spheres 6'OV/119-59-1-2U/23 Hi '-h Precision Apparatus for Determination of the Inclination of the Earth-s Surface and Registration of Earthquake Waves are of the same radius R. The space between two discs is filled with the compressed air (0.4 atum. above normal) entering through the pipe T, the ta X and the j p channel i (0.2 to 0.3 mm dia.). The thickness of the air layer is in the range of tenths of a micron. In this condition it can be visualized that the upper disc d is "floating" in the air taking a position of the least potential energy. At the smallest change of the angle of disc D. the disc (t Till take a new position again requiring the least pcte-nt-iaj-- energy. If the inclination of the sphere S is equal to then the slidina disc will be displaced by PR, Thus. determination of R becomes signif-i3ant, e.g. the angle of inclination P = 0.001"-, the centre-4 of disc d is shifted by 0.1 mm = PR = 4.8 x 10 R. R = 20833 m. In practice the discs are made c-f aluminium or brass 20 cm dia. and 1 cm thic--k. The amount of air required for a contJn-lous service is about 30 1 per 24 hours, if the microscope M gives Card 2/3 the magnification 35X, then the displacement of 5 cm SOV49-59-1-20/2- High Precision Apparatus for Determination of -I,-he Inclination Cf 0 the Earth's Sur-face and Registration of Earthq7aa-ke Waves C) is equivalent to the angle of inclination 1". In the case of 3',::OX magnification this distance gives an angle of 0.1%, while I mm - 0.02'. Fig.l,,b shows how the in-31inations can be plotted, and F-J9.3 shows an actual example of registering the earthquake waves. It is described here. Eleither tglass nor liquid are used for this level. The diode of operation is as follows: Tro netal disks :Jieell on a ball surface (Fig 1). Compressed air of 1.3-1,4 at- mosdheres is conducted to the center of the lower disk by a ' z-:.7,all tube and a fine canal with a diameter of 0.1-0.2 mm. Bj theaction of the air molecalt~s, the upper disk is separated from the lovier one, and .-lides abovehe latter, frictionless and at low speed. After a certain time when the potential ener.-Y of the upper disk attains a minimaim value, it takes the lowest position. The Gliding disk is a pendulum without suspension and without axis of rotation. The constriction of the netal level is shovin in figure 2, and described. To build a device of a certain sensitiveness, the radius of curvature of tae ball surface of the level car, be determined. Such an example Card 1/2 is computed here. Such a device was built. by the author in "eta! Levels SQV/6-59-7-2o/25 1956, and showed a !-.igh sensitiveness. Besides, an ap,aratus p with a special device was built. It inaicated. the inclinations of the earth's surface on a scale of 0".02 in one millimeter. By a reduction of the surface curvature, a sensitiveness of 1,,.10-5 in one milli,-.eter can be obtained. Besides, the con- struction of a to~as-sha-ed level was develoDed. It is distin-uislied. from the former by the shape and the kind of U readin-. The torus-shaped level (Fia 4) consists of a block nith a torus-sha-3cd hole. A second block glides in this hole. On the gliding block, a line is plotted which is observed by a microscone with cross iiires. The line will awiir- durina the observations. The zero gradantion of the cross wires is ad- justed by the factory to the horizontal position of the level. There are 5 figures. Ca-ed 21 19 SHAKUROV, P.
