as well as 2-methoxy-terephthalic acids
(12.6% and 82~p respectively), which are obtained
after the methylation of CR products with dimethyl
sulfate, the reduction of the resulted methyl esters
of phenols on Pt (from PtOk) and oxidation with
potassium permanganate.
One mole of I is heated to 210"C during the first
hour and to 220-230'1 C during the following two
hours. The melt is dissolved in ether and is
washed a few times with 15% sodium hydroxide.
The combined alkaline extract is acidified with
concentrated hydrochloinic acid and is extracted

that 11111scular atrophy occurs; most frequently and earliest in the affection of the
vulativous and motor ventres (the upper parietal zone and the central gyri) aml
thvir afferent tracts. In ail the observed amyotrophia cases the processes were
diffuse. and in the majority of cases the wasting of hand muscles was pronounced.
In parasagittal upper-parietal affections the wasting of the lower limbs was more
freqtient. fit cortical affection of the central gyri and of the parietal lobe, pro-
m-unced wasting of a pa rticular limb or muscle group was dependenton the affection
(if a corresponding area. viz. in parasagittal affections atrophy of lower limb
inuseles was more pronounced, and in affections of medially situated zones
atrophy of the upper limb muscles. The degree of wasting in cases with cortical
foci was less pronounced than with subcortical foci. In subcortical cases the amyo-
trophia was diffuse and the upper limbs were largely affected. In cortical and sub-
cortical processes muscle tonus was increased, and in affections of the parietal
cortical segments it was decreased. In spastic paralysis with a tendency to con-
traetures a lengthened chronaxy of the hand and forearm extensors and shortened

chronaxy of the flexors were found. In 'flaccid paralysis' the chronaxy of hand and
forearm flexors and extensors was more or less lengthened and the rheobase in-
creased. Amyotrophia developed very early in massive subcortical lesions and
after the extirpation of parietofrontal, parietal and parieto-occipital tumours. It
regularly appeared 10-15 days after injury or operation and increased rapidly,
beginning with the small hand muscles. Muscle atrophy can be very important
diagnostically in serious conditions - general inhibition. increase of intracranial
"iter epileptic seizure - which impede the correct investigation

of sensibility. The degree of pronouncement and distribution of amyotrophia com-
bined with other clinical symptoms can be of considerable importance in the deter-
mination not only of the localization but also of the character of the process.
