The break-, -do-w-n occurs in two stages. During the initial stage conditions are produced for the passage of large current (electron-ion exchange sets~i in). Pairs ~of electrodeh-=e of Fe, Mo, Ta, Ni, and Cu were investigated in Card 1/2 L 23691-66 ACC NR: pairs at voltage 4.5 kev and gaps of 2 mm. Ignition was with the aid of an auxiliary electrode. It was found that the temperature ~of the discharge varies in proportion to the change In current (voltage). The density of the current at which one cathode spot can .be passed in the vacuum breakdown is characteristic of are discharge 5 and amounts to approximately 10 a/cm2. Bibliography, 11 titles. ~N. In order to demonstrate the courses of error, the author analyzes the operation of an oscillator through the half-cycle by means of breaking down the core induction curve into linear sections and by oscillator operat- ing equations, using a coefficient determined by junction impedance in the conducting- 1! transistor. From the direct relationship of core flux to collector current, a mathematical expression of the time lapse for a specific change in magnetization is ~developed, and thence, the pulse duration: Card 1/2 ACC NRt AT6008306 L V,+I-1q) 7' 4 ~74 4 f- i_ . , , r 'k (E i avrc)- q+lav c 4-0 Portions of the resulting expression for determining output frequency are used to show the effect of core material on linearity. In practical applications the ap- proximate formula is only valid in the ideal case. If the transformer core material has a linear magnetic characteristic, it is shown from collector current at zero flux and al' maximum flux with respecL to amplication factor, that converter frequency [is not dependent on voltage generated. The error from nonlinear conversion is re- lated to significant core magnetization current, without which the error does not ,occur. For linear design, core material selection is the primary consideration, with preference given to materials with rectalinear, narrow hysteresis loops. Orig. art. has: 3 figures and 13 formulas. . Such Imaterials include ribbon wound torroidal permalloy cores. Linearity of the fundarien- ital circuit is shown by analysis based on constant load, identical torroid character- listics, and negligible coil and core losses; however, response at output lags some- 1what behind voltage change, due to the time of passage from first to second portion lof induction curve. Effect of core material on error is given for cores of permalloy I .types 791 MM (curve I) and 50NP (curve II) in Fig. 1. Reduction of error is accom- plished by insertion of a bias voltage source in the base circuit. With this con- jiguration, output frequency may approach the required value, depending an the a=ount of bias and proper selection of resistor values for core materiai used. For constant -output -frequency r generators, the final frequency formula has this form: 4L Ir, (2k-1) + 21. .For generators that linearly convert'supply voltage 0 1 r 6 'aJ into frequency, the formula is: The effect oi temperature -caused I T L-1k variation of parameters on -enezator (2 k 1) 2P r6 W 4),r,,w Cord 1/2 -A CC _N (see ifigure) frequency ard on statIc accuracy ol" conversion strongly depends on the shape of the mean FP N hysteresis loop of the transformer -core material. In ry_~~ most cases, the transformer core is made from a W WS W W permalloy with narrow rectangular hysteresis loop. TI Their magnetic character; stics strongly depend on temperature. Two factors are basically responsible for the temperature -caused frequency instability: (a) variation of r, in the generators whose" transformers have linear B - I (H) cores and (b) saturation induction of permalloy no-gap cores. Several methods of temperature -erf ect compensation, such as an LG resonant circuit in transistor-base circuit, power supply with a reverse temperature coefficient, introduction oi temperature -dependent resistors, known in Soviet ,publications are reviewed. 'The junctions were produced by diffusion of phosphorus in a p-type silicon crystal with initial resistivity of Card 113 L 21154-66 ACC NR: AP6003788 0 I ohm-cm. The depth of the junction was 2 -- 3 ~L, and the junction was in the [111] plane. The light source was an ordinary incandescent lamp and the illumination level (3 and 10 W/m2) was measured with a calibrated photocell. Thecbformation was produced by a corundum needle with a point of radius 60 ~L, placed perpendicular to the sur- face of the crystal. Measurements were made of the photoemf and the photocurrent of the junction, as functions of the force applied to the needle, and also of the influence of the elastic deformation on the volt-ampere characteristic, both in darkness and under illumination. The photoemf was found to decrease rapidly with increasing load on the, needle, and the current for a given voltage increased with increasing pressure. There was no difference between the volt-ampere character-, istic in darkness and under illumination. To interpret the results,-. theoretical estimates were made of the change in the concentration of the minority carriers, due to the shift of the conduction-band edges and the valence-band edges. The photocurrent decreased slightly with increasing load. Estimates are presented, alsa for-the change in the, .1~idth of the forbidden.band under-the needle,,and for the current .through the deformed pn junction. The calculation results are in, card L 21154-66 ACC NII: AP6003788 grood agreement with the theory when the mechanical load on the needle exceeds 10 grams. The authors thank A. P. Landsman and G. The elevice operates on the acho-principle. The defect depth is determined by means of a signal which is reflected from the surface of an auxiliary plate installed in the immersion liquid at the surface of the test object and opposite the signal generator (see Fig. 1). To eliminate errors due to the nonparallelism of the planes of the siepal generator and auxiliary reflecting plate, the latter is constructed in the form of a mosaic consisting of separate triangular regions forming a row of triangular prisms. As a result of this arrangement the angle of the reflected ultrasonic ray is equal to the angle of incidence for all angles of incidence,, which insures the retvru of the reflected ray to the signal generator of the defectoscope. 1/2 UDCz 620.179.16.05 L I(Y212-66 ACC NR: .A-P5028503 Orig. art. has: 1 figure.
