'TRANSLATION: On the basis of analysis of the spectrcgrams of an
.aperiodic controlled breakdown of vacuum gaps at residual-gas
pressure 10-5 mm Hg, and microphotographs of the surfaces of the
jelectrodes, it has been found that in order for the breakdown purrent-
;to flow, it is essary for the anode material to evaporate. Pairs
~of electrodeh-=e of Fe, Mo, Ta, Ni, and Cu were investigated in

pairs at voltage 4.5 kev and gaps of 2 mm. Ignition was with the
aid of an auxiliary electrode. It was found that the temperature
~of the discharge varies in proportion to the change In current
(voltage). The density of the current at which one cathode spot can

ABSTRACT: The general mathematical expression for dependence of frequency on supply
voltage in semiconductor oscillators with permalloy transformer cores is only approx-
imate, resulting in a 2 to 3% error. In order to demonstrate the courses of error,
the author analyzes the operation of an oscillator through the half-cycle by means
of breaking down the core induction curve into linear sections and by oscillator operat-
ing equations, using a coefficient determined by junction impedance in the conducting- 1!
transistor. From the direct relationship of core flux to collector current, a
mathematical expression of the time lapse for a specific change in magnetization is
~developed, and thence, the pulse duration:

Portions of the resulting expression for determining output frequency are used to
show the effect of core material on linearity. In practical applications the ap-
proximate formula is only valid in the ideal case. If the transformer core material
has a linear magnetic characteristic, it is shown from collector current at zero
flux and al' maximum flux with respecL to amplication factor, that converter frequency
[is not dependent on voltage generated. The error from nonlinear conversion is re-
lated to significant core magnetization current, without which the error does not
,occur. For linear design, core material selection is the primary consideration, with
preference given to materials with rectalinear, narrow hysteresis loops. Orig. art.

formations, prodUced an indentive needle in a direction perpendicu-
lar to the p-n junct eon plane, on the properties of silicon solar-
battery photocells in which the pn junction is situated not far below
the surface of the crystal. 'The junctions were produced by diffusion
of phosphorus in a p-type silicon crystal with initial resistivity of

I ohm-cm. The depth of the junction was 2 -- 3 ~L, and the junction
was in the [111] plane. The light source was an ordinary incandescent
lamp and the illumination level (3 and 10 W/m2) was measured with a
calibrated photocell. Thecbformation was produced by a corundum
needle with a point of radius 60 ~L, placed perpendicular to the sur-
face of the crystal. Measurements were made of the photoemf and the
photocurrent of the junction, as functions of the force applied to the
needle, and also of the influence of the elastic deformation on the
volt-ampere characteristic, both in darkness and under illumination.
The photoemf was found to decrease rapidly with increasing load on the,
needle, and the current for a given voltage increased with increasing
pressure. There was no difference between the volt-ampere character-,
istic in darkness and under illumination. To interpret the results,-.
theoretical estimates were made of the change in the concentration of
the minority carriers, due to the shift of the conduction-band edges
and the valence-band edges. The photocurrent decreased slightly with
increasing load. Estimates are presented,alsa for-the change in the,
.1~idth of the forbidden.band under-the needle,,and for the current

'ABSTRACT: This Author Certificate describes an ultrasonic immersion defectoscope
for the detection and control of defects in manufactured goods. The elevice operates
on the acho-principle. The defect depth is determined by means of a signal which is
reflected from the surface of an auxiliary plate installed in the immersion liquid
at the surface of the test object and opposite the signal generator (see Fig. 1).
To eliminate errors due to the nonparallelism of the planes of the siepal generator
and auxiliary reflecting plate, the latter is constructed in the form of a mosaic
consisting of separate triangular regions forming a row of triangular prisms. As a
result of this arrangement the angle of the reflected ultrasonic ray is equal to the
angle of incidence for all angles of incidence,, which insures the retvru of the
reflected ray to the signal generator of the defectoscope.

Abstract A review is made of a series of books published by the Acad. of So.p
TISSR, which were written by various authors and intended to make avail-
able pertinent, up-to-date, scientific information to persons engaged
1~n agriculture. The books cover a wide range of subjects.with special
emphasis on soil science and soil fertilization. Despite some short-
comings, which are pointed out,the books are given a high rating.
