TITLE: Alterations in the Peripheral Blood and in the Bone "arrow of Hats at a Later Period Following a Single M 0 X-Radiation ?EARIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1960, v:)l. 133, No. 0", pp. 1455-1457 TEXT: The author wanted to study the composition of the peripheral blood and of the bone marrow of rats X-rayed only once in their lifetime. The radiation injury was caused by an PYM-3 (RU11-3) apparatus at a dose of 500 r and a dose power in the air of 90.6 - 83.6 r//min. The author counted the number of leucocytes of all animals before and 31 99 169 219 30, 90, 180, 270, and 360 days after the irradiation. The weight of the bone marrow was checked before and 90, 180, 270, and 360 days after the irradiation. The treatment was lethal for 20-30',*o' of the animals within 30 days. Those surviving (101) were examined. Their average lifetime was Card 112 84706 Alterations in the Peripheral Blood and in the S/020/60/133/oo6/o-i6/016 Bone Marrow of Rats at a Later Period B016/BO60 Following a Sin-le X-Radiation 0 30"U days. Table 1 shows the chan.ge in the leucocytic formula at the abovementioned times. Table 2 shows the change in the myelogram. The author found that the restoration of the normal composition of the peripheral blood under the experimental conditions was only temporary. In the course of time, in the late periods following the radiative action, the blood composition a.-ain tends toward rejuvenation, and the amount of segmentonuclear neutrophils increases. "hese qualitative alterations in the peripheral blood take place in parallel to a sharply marked hyperplasia of the bone marrow. There are 2 tables and 9 references, 4 of which are Soviet. TITLE: Reaction disorders of the hemopoictic system at remote periods after irradiation PERIODICAL: Byulleteil' eksperimental'noy biologii i meditsiny, v. 53, no. 4, 1962, 38-42 TEXT: Most observations on the effect of irradiation on the hemopoictic system have been made within the period of radiation sickness. These experiments were performed on 236 rats. Radiation sickness was in- induced by x-irradiation of 500r with a PYM-3 (RUM-3) apparatus at 85-96r/min. With such a dose, about 35% of the animals died within 30 days of the irradiation. The leucocyte reaction was elaborated with Filatov's serum, I ml of which was injected i. m. 90, 180 or 270 days after irradiation. The WBC count and composition as%vell as the composition of bone marrow was established 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours after in- jection of the serum. Irradiation brought about a delay in the leucocyte reaction to the foreign protein even after 3 months. This is apparently due to the retarded maturation of cells as well as to an inhibition of their incorporation into the peripheral blood. No response reaction was observed in the bone marrow 9 months after irradiation, although the leucocyte reaction at that time was almost normal. This is explained by the fact that the bone marrow was probably extensively damaged so that other hemopoictic organs, namely the spleen and lymph nodes reacted to the foreign protein thus developing Ieucocytosis in the peripheral blood. The physicochemical characteristics of the new types of petroleum stock are compared with those of green oil; in the degree of aromatization they are identical, but in fractional composition, molecular weight, and viscosity, green oil is slightly lighter. In- dustrial tests confirmed that hydrofined phenol extracts of catalytic gas oil, the :ard 1/2 UDC: 66,095.21:547.21.001.5 L -128o7-66 ACC NRt APS028680 initial sulfur-containing phenol extract of catalytic gas oil, and also mixtures of thermal gas oil and green oil (in the ratio of 60:40) can be used in the production of activated PH-70 furnace black in plants equipped with cyclone reactors, a dry system being used for trapping the black.
