The.unit is designed for improved sensitivity, and reliability. -The magnetic circuit is detachable and is made in the form of an 'ex-, ternal shell with an inner groove along the diameter of the suspension springs. An insert fits into this groove. The head of the seismic detector is made in the form of a housing with lateral holes and an annular slot together with a cover with. screws. The sealing system is made in the form of 'a cap located in the housing of the seismic detector and equipped with a flange on which is placed:a rubber sealing ring under tension. Card 1/8 0 The Antarctic; materials on the History (Cont.) 464 COVERAGE: The present volume, sponsored by the Geographical Society of the USSR, is a collection of articles authored by several geographers summarizing up to date information on the Antarctic region. It provides an account of exploration and discovery since the first Russianlexpedition into the Antarctic in 1819, and describes the region's geological and geomorphologic&.l structure, glaciation processes, and the water currents of the south polar seas. The last chapter contains a glossary of Antarctic place names which is appearing in Soviet literature for the first time. The book is profusely illustrated with diagrams, photographs, and maps. TITLE: The Experinental Determination of the Tension in an Anisotropic Plate Subjected to the Action of a Concentrated Force by Means of the Optical Method II (Eksperimentaltnoye opredeleniya opticheskim metodcm napryazhennogo sostoyaniya Y anizotropnoy plastinke, nakhodyashcheysya pod deystTiyem. sosredotochennoy sily.II) PERIODICAL: Zhurnal eksperimentallnoy i teoreticheskoy fiziki, 1958, Vol. 349 Nr 4P PP. 894 - 898 (USSR) ABSTRACT: This paper is the completion of an earlier work (Ref 1) in which the tensions in anisotropic materials were controlled by the optical method of investigation. In this work the authors determine the tension in a plate produced of a sonocrystal with 6o% TlBr+4o% TlJ. This crystal belong's to the isometric crystal system and the concentrated force is to act along the direction Clio] . In the observation of a stressed anisotropic plate in Card 1/3 polarized light the optical interference image depends on the The Experimental Determination of the Tension in 56-34-4-i6/6o an Anisotropic Plate Subjected to the Action of a Concentrated Porce by Means of the Optical Method II orientation of the acting forces relatively to the crystallo- graphical axes of the plate. This work also is to show those differences in the interference images and also in the tension' distribution, which are caused by a chan.:-e in the orientation of the plate. The model to investigate was made of a monocry- stal of the alloy consisting of 40 molecular % TlBr + 6o mole- cular % TlJ (this alloy belongs to the group of the "transpa- rent metals"). The sample consisted of i) 40,5 1 34,0 X 4,15 Im large plate. The pressure acted in the direction E110]. A figure illustrates the isochromatic curves in the case of cir- cular polarization, obtained by the apparatusFIrY, which were taken by an interference filter with the mean wave length Amean~ up. The optical phase difference in a horizontal section was measured, too. For the points of this cross section also the optical quantities V and & were ascertained. From these data then the quantities ~ and (cr 1- d2) ware computed. FinallyIthe Card 2/3 following results are obtained: 1) The tensions are radial. At the end the author cakes some comparisons. Theory and experimental results are in good agreement. Finally the author~thank; A.L.Shakh-Budagov for his assistance in the performance of this work.
