TEM This is a didactic articla informing about the use of
mercury and molten b~isin. metals, i.e. sodium, potassium and their alloys,
as heat conducting media in industry. Some chemical processes can be
carried out only at raiJed temperatures and in certain cases molten
metals are ideal heat carriers. They are characterized by good heat
transfer coefficient and low vapor pressure which is useful when high
temperAtures have to be employed at relatively low pressures. Although
the latent heat of mere-iry vapor condensation is low and the specific
density of same is only 3.9 kg/m3, 1 m3 of mercury vapor releases 266
kcal. Because of high toxicity of mercury vapors and violent reaction
between basic metals an4 water, great care must be observed in designing
the plant. There are two methods of mercury application as heat carrieri
a) by circulation of lijuid mercury between the heat source and the heated

apparatus or b) by using mercury vapors. The heat transfer coefficient
between metal wall and li4uid mercury varies from 4,000 - 12,000 kcal/m2/
h/OC, but in case of mercury vapor application it drops to 300-800 kcal/
M2/h/'D^%o. The heat exchange ratio can be increased by addition of small
quantities of Na and Mg which reduce surface tension of the mercury. At
temperatures above 5500C pure mercury and sodium-mercury amalgamate
corrode the ateel; in the latter case Na20 Fe20 slime is formed. Most
resistant to corrosion is the steel "Sicromo 55 containing 0.12% C, 5%
Cr, 0.5% No and 1.5% Si. High toxicity of mercury vapors require special
preventive meaaures to te observed. Ozone was found to be the best
medium preventing Hg evaporation. In general, safety regulations at
plants using mercury as heating medium are similar to those employed in
chemical industry. The most common detector of Hg in the atmosphere is
the bright-yellow SeS, which decomposes and darkens under mercury influence.
Still more accurate is the colorimetric Polezhayev method, based on the
reaction between Hg and colorless cupric iodate, which will detect 0-0005
mg Hg in air sample, or the electronic method applying ultra violet rays.
When using basic metals Na ind K, particularly in atomic reactors, safety
regulations are more sti,ict and complicated. High reactivity of basic
