Abstract: ently, 2-C1130-4-ClO 6 If3OCK12 COO11 (V). The
latter product differs from the isomeric aoid,
probably All-CH30-5-ClC6 1130-CH2COOH (VI) ob-
tained from monochloroquaiacol (VIl) and (II).
The structure of IV is proved by reverse syn-
thesis from 2-CH 3 0-4, 5-C12 C6 H2 OH (VIII) and
II. With a view towards proving the impossibil-
ity of the assignment to VII of the structure
2-CH3 O_6_ClC6 H3 OH, the introduction of a CHO
group into VII by the Reimer-Tiemann reaction was
attempted; the product obtained (yield 4%, mp 1200)
was an aldehyde giving the intensive yellow color
with NaOH characteristic of aromatic orthohydroxy-

Abstract The surface temperatures of metallic bcklies (mde of cop-
per, aluminum, iron and steel) were measured simultaneous-
ly by means of steel-constantan thermocouples of two types
-- one with a hot junction formed by welding, and one with
a hot junction formed by mechanical contact between the in-
dividual thermal electrodes and the surface of the metal.
Whea stationary media were surrounded by a meclium (oil)
with the same temperature, both types of thermocouples gave
identical readings, regar4ess of the distance between the
thermal electrodes of the thermocouples of the second type.
When:the heated stationary bodies were not immersed in oil,

Abstract : the thermocouples of the second type gave higher readings
(the difference reached 25% at a body temperature of 1660).
Vuen the temperature of a rotating rod was measured, the
fricti6n,of the contacts caused the readings of the ther-
mocouples to be too high. The authors consider this proof
that the measurement of the surface temperature of metallic
bodies is more accurate wh,~n performed by means of thermo-
couples with mechanical contacts,

TL.,~T: Known methods of welding vacuum tight metal-to-metal
and metal-to-insulator joints which ca~'be degassed are not
suitable for use in the construction of ion pumps under current
laboratory conditions. A new method of producing such joints is
described. The method consists of fitting an aluminium seal
between accurately machined surfaces on the parts to be joined,
*C under
t1hen pressing between two flanges and heating to 530
vacuum. After cooling down, the flanges can be removed. Water-
glass should be applie'd to the contact surface of the ceramic,
which it3 then fired. The method is suitable for joining steel-
copper, kovar-dural and even titanium-titanium, titanium-stainless
steel. The joint can be dismantled in the cold state without
damaging the joined parts. Using aluminium wire as seal material,
pressures of up to 80 kg/mm2 were used for achieving compression.'
