ABSTRACT: This article describes investigations of the effect of ultrasonic vi-
brations on the strength and ductility of commercial iron, the primary feature
of the tests being that the static and vibratory loads were Applied slmultaneous~"
ly during elongation of the specimen. An ultrasonic generator with a magnato-..
striction oscillator operating at 21 ke was used as the source of the vibratory -7
loads of ultrasonic frequency. The amplitude ofthe oscillations was measured at'
the end of the specimen by a microscope. The test specimens were made out of
20-mm diameter rods, annealed in a vacuum at 600C for 3 hrs, cooled down with the-'---

(up to 300C), Testing of prestressed (by torsion) specimens showed
that the decrease of a ando did not depend on the torsion angle.
Experiments with various strain rates (1, 10,~ and 30 mm/mih) showed
they did not affect the change.of mechanical properties. 0 ig, art,
