In a study of 24,000 deliveries in the yr. 1916-1943 it was found that the nconatal
mortality due to birth trauma was 6.2%, causing two thirds of the total dcath rate
in the newborn. A definite distinction is made between intracranial haemorrha-cs
and cerebral oedema. The latter Is regarded as a result of anoxic, damage to n2rvc
cells as well as to the intracranial blood vessels. Increased permeability leads to
transudation of fluid with a higher protein content and thus to the formation ofocdc-
ma. An attempt is made to establish a symptomatology different from intracranial
haemorrhage but in the end the author admits that a clear CSF is the most impor-
tant differential diagnostic finding. Various means to reduce intracranW prescure
and capillary permeability are discussed in detail.

TIUZ- Investigation of the countercurrent, coprecipitation of indium with
difficultly soluble compounds of heavy metals
P=ODICAL: Ukrainskiy khimicheskiy zhurnal, v. 29, no. 3, 1963, 339 342
TEXT: The countercurrent method for the, separation of metals is suggested
by the JJOHX Ali YCCP . (IONKh AS UkrSSR).and developed by-the present, authors.
The method can be employed successfully for the separation of metals from sul-
furic acid extracts of dust and distillates in copper mills. The present paper
deals with the behaviour of Indium in countercurrent coprecipitation with hy-
droxydes, carbonates, and phosphates of iron, copper, and zinc. The method of
stepwise ion exchange was used - the initial solution *as dividedinto several
portions corresponding to the number of-exchange Fteps;. to the first portion
there was added the quantity of precipitant sufficient for the precipitation of
all metals in the initial solution; the precipitate was then separated (centri-
fuged) and subsequently treated with all following portions of the initial solu-

tion; then the precipitate of the second portion of solution.was'precipitated
and treated subsequently with the next.following; these operations were re-
peated to the precipitation of the precipitate in the last portion of the solu-
tion. The initial solutions were prepared from pure iron,.indium, copper, and
.zinc sulfate and the precipitations carried out with solutions of:sodium hy-
droxyde, or carbonate and trisodiumphosphate. Indium was determined by spectral.
analysis, copper iodometrically, zinc and iron by titration. The experiments
demonstrated a considerable concentration of iridium by countercurrent copreci-
pitation. Ion exchange occurs already after.2 - 3 steps. Indium precipitated
after iron and before copper and zinc. The separation effect of the counter-
current coprecipitation method is improved using as precipitation agents car-
bonates and phosphates of alkali metals@ There are 5 tables.

ABSTRACT: The author complains that electromagnetic voltage correctors
used as basic excitation regulators of synchronous generators,
though excellent, consume too much power and are sometimes
hard to manage. After having rejected other methods of re-
medying the drawback because of their being inefficient, ex-
pensive and, at times, not workable, he advocates the follow-
ing methodi corrector to be linked with a 3 x 30 or 3 x 40 mcf
condenser battery, Thus the current needed by the corrector
from the voltage transformers becomes lower, and both the
relieving of the voltage transformers as well as regulation
stability is attained. To achieve a still higher stability,

it is necessary to keep the rated condenser potential at
at least 400 V. He advises the plants to produce correctors
with built-in condenser batteries.
