ABSTRACT: Experlm-ent~s were carriea out on 8 ra-tan with electrodes
implanted in the cerebral cortex,, dorsal hippocampus and mesence h-

alie reticular formation, EEG was continously recorded. Trachea was
prepared and left in situ and again EEG recorded. Next day tracheo-
tomy was made and 3.2 mg/kg body weight of curare was administered.
EW was recorded until the animal died. Curare affected the sleep
.Phases, and the brain showed slightly marked high voltage activity.
with slow waves (rudimentary telencephalic sleep) which either
lasted continually or was interrupted by electrical seizures, which
later became manifest somatically. In some eases it'Was interrupted
by spontaneous and frequently repeated arousal reactions. Curare
did not cause changes in freauenoy or duration of electrical seizurs.~,

Abstract: 16 healthy men, 21 to 31'years old, and 8 rats were
investigated with EIZ for 3 successive nights. In man, the
length of individual. stages of sleep is permanent, in rat it
changes. The sequence of the stages of sleep and their dist-f-ib-
ution in certain time intervals are very similar in man and rat.

TITLE: Plastic lubricants produced from mixed soaps

TEXT: The basic aspects of using soaps in the production of lubricants
are set.forth. The effects of adding Mg, Ca, Zn, Cd or other soaps on the
properties of Na-lubricants are described. Particulars of several lubri-
cants prepared at the works in Czechowicy, Poland, are given. The LT2
anlifriction lubricant for bearing which contains 12.5% Na soap and 3%
Ca soap, has considerably higher mechanical strength tbW'Lthat,based on Na----
soaps of the same consistency, also better colloidal and thermal stabili-
ties. The NK-30 lubricant, intended for components of aircraft controls
and friction units working at temperatures between -60 and +85 OC,'contains
9WQ of.Na soap and 5% of Ca soapi it also contains*Na acetate for stabiliz-
ing the system, and Pb soap which improves the strength of the film of
lubricant. The LTI-13 lubricant for bearings of rolling stock contains

temperatures and has good colloidal stability. The CSW soap contains 7v/o
of Na soap and 30% of Ca soap. The introduction of Na soap into Ca lubri-
cants has enabled the amount of thickener to be reduced from 16 to 12%,
the consistency remaining unchanged, besides which the oil-is'prevente4,

TEXT: 'The Co gamma ray initiated polymerization of acr ylonitrile (0)
and copolymerization of MIT with styrene kSt) and methyl methacrylate Omk)
are discussed. Results.o (1) At -780C the polymerization of-AN initiated-
by gamma irradiation was a .uccessful in triethyl amine only, while at 0 0c
the electron donor or acceptor properties of the solvents'(triethyl amino

ethyl chloride, acetonitrile or butyronitrile) had no effect on the poly-~
merization. (2) When copolymerization of AN with St was initiated by
gomma rays, copolymers enriched with AN formed at low temperatures, while
at normal temperatures an azootrope characteristic of the radical polymeri-.
zation of these monomers was formed. (3) Copolymerization of All with MMA,
in itiated by gamma rays, yielded in triethyl amine at -780C a Polymer en-
r3.0hed with All, independently of the initial ratio of the monomers.
