ABSTRACTt The article gives detailed information on the new "GOST
1284-5711-standard for V-belts, which will be in force from
1 October 1958jand replaces the "GOST 1284-45". The V-belt
dimensions, as well as the dimensions, m%terials and machin-
ing methods for the pulleys, are chosen in accordance with
ISO/TC 41 recommendations. The length gra 'dations of belts'
correspond to the series R40 of the preference numbers
series system. The belt tension, 12 kg/CM2 for belts work-
ing on small diameter pulleys, and 15 kg/CM2, for belts
working on large pulleys, has been made tae standard, as a
result of investigations made by the Scientific Research In-
stitute of the Rubber Industry, as well as in accordance
with ISO/TC 41 recommendations and the latest foreign stand-

ABSTRACT: The advantages in variable speed drives of V-beits with
a width to thickness ratio greatly exceeding standard
V-belt sections consist of an increased control range
and reduced size of the transmission. The necessary
transverse stiffness is obtained by transverse teeth.
Those with teeth on the tension side are better mainly
becaiise they can be made with wrapped side surfaces. A

The series of lengths approved for production is shown in
Table 2. The maximum power transmitted by the belt
section at a speed of 20 m/see is given in Table 3. At
5 m/sec belt speed, a correction coefficient of 0.31 is
applied; at 30 m/sec, a coefficient of 0.72.

Abstract A discrepancy was established concerninE the hi-Jh b-foche-
mical indices of certaiin culture media (pepton and nizro-
r~.en content) and the yield of a microbic material.
For instance, on a fun~,i hydrolyzate of a meat juice in
the absence of pepton, zhe yield of dysenteric cells was
founa to be three times hirJier than that on an acidic
hydrolysate containing 6% of pepton. The author asswraes
that the -yield of a nLicrobic material from a definite cul-
ture volume is more specific for a culture medium than a
conventional determination of it-s biochemical composition.

the rate of its formation increases substantially above 10900C. The effect of forma-
tion shows up at 1210-12806C depending upon the initial caVosition. Authors thank
