In view of the anxiety spread among some of the clinicists concerning blood trans-
fusion in kidney diseases, and of the uncertainty as to the fate of the kidneys in
cases treated with blood transfusions - the kidney function was examined in 25
such cases: in 9 cases of kidney diseases and in 16 cases of other diseases without
lesions in the kidneys, viz. in 5 cases of liver, gallbladder and stomach diseases,
in 3 cases of chronic myeloid leukaemia, in 3 cases of Addison Biermer's disease
and in 5 cases of secondary anaemia in the course of some other disease. Pre-
conserved blood or blood cell mass was transfused. There were no important
clinical Lomplications in any of those cases. To investigation were submitted: the
period before blood transfusion and the period after it. Glomerular filtration and
tubular reabsorption were determined by the endogenic chromogenic test with
Poper-Mandel-Meyer's method in Orlowski's modification; the urea level in the
blood was determined and the general examination of the urine performed. The
investigations showed that after blood transfusion- (1) both the blood urea level
and the glomerular filtration did not undergo any significant change; (2) tubular
reabsorption in cases with healthy kidneys has a decreasing tendency; it is not,
however, an essential feature; (3) tubular reabsorption in cases of kidney dis-

eases undergoes an inconsiderable, but essential decrease; (4) in the results of
the general urine examination no essential differences are noted; (5) blood trans-
fusion not only has no direct harmful influence on the functional state of the kid-
neys, but has a beneficial influence on the general state of the patient and on the
course of the disease.

ABSTRACT: A review of recent (mostly American) work on exploding wireal
is presented. The review is based ont~e Chace-Levine classification of i
slow, supersonic, and ablative explosion types (Chace, W. G. and Levine,!
It. A., J. Appl, Phys., 31, 1298, 1960). In addition to a discussion of
some of the unexplained aspects of the phenomenon, attention is also
gi-4,en to various methods of investigating exploding ifire plasma by means!
of;,'lasers. An experiment is described in some detail in which two
laq-ers are used to study the process of an exploding metal cylinder.
Tl~p author concludes that the useof laser techniques should clarify many
ptoblems dealing with 1) the optical properties of metal vapor -~t very
