TEXT: The author briefly reviews various types of vacuum, gages.
Values between 760 and 0.1 mm Hg are measured with various types
of mercury gages. Values betwcen 0.1 and 0.001 mm Hg ar S measured
with thermoelectric vacuum gages. Pressures between 10- are 10-7
mm Hg can be measured by the ionization gage. New ionization gajys
have been developed for measuring pressures between 10-8 and 10- 1
mm Hg and the pumping effect of the ionization gage has been ascer-
tained. On the basis of investigations, new vacuum producing meth-
ods have been developed without using a working agent. One of these
methods, that of "ionic pumping", is based on the ionization of gas
molecules and atoms in the respective space and thu direcrion of
these ions by the electric field tgward a preliminary vacuum pump,
This pump produces a vacuum of 10- mm Hg and has an evacuation

well as the proper volume of the pum2. With such equipment, Soviet
specialists produced a vacuum of 10-0 - 10-9 mm Hg with an evacua-
tion speed of 50,000 lit/sec. There are 8 figures.

Abstract The authors have used a combination of a Hil-er
absorDtion neter and a Radicme4-er Go. polarograph
for the automatic recording of the results obtainec
during electrophoresis in the course of clinical
anaiy5es on blood serum. The photometric deter-
mi-nation, is made with the absorptioi-. metert, the
current FeneratQd in the 'photocell pasees through
the galvanometer and thence directly to the elec-
trodes of the polaro-raph. Tno curves are re-
corded at the waxlyrium sensitivity of the apparatus.

TM. The article describes the T1A theodolite produced by Messrs. Wild.
A glass vessel partly filled with liquid and called compensator is placed in the
path of light rays in the vertical circle of microscope. The compensator is
placed in such a way that light rays from the vertical circle pass through the
liquid. If the instrument is In a level position, the flat bottom and the Sur-
face of the liquid are level and light rays are not bent. If the theodolite is
tilted., the liquid surface is level but the f lat bottom is tiltedin relation to the
liquid surface by an angle. Thus the liquid creates a small-angle prism bending
light rays by the same angle. The compensator angle may create an optional angle
in relation to the vertical. The inclination component in the vertical plane
causes a shift in the Image of lines of the vertical circle resulting in a change
of the reading on the vertical circle. The transversal-component increasing or
decreasing lines do not influence the reading. The liquid bending coefficient
