TITLE., Hexokinase and glucokinase in liver and muscle cell fractions-of susliks during hibernation and awakening SOURCE: Zhurnal evolyutsionnoy biokhimii i fiziologii, v. 1, no. 1, 1965, 32-37 TOPIC TAGS; laboratory animal, metabolism, enzyme, liver, hibernation, muscle p tein, physiology ABSTRACT: Experiments-were perfor --to determine glucok -med inase activit:;r in-the mito- 3N~'t, chondria and soluble fraction from the'muscles and liver of wakeful adilt -susliks (Citallus pygmeus Pall.) and the activity of-hexokinase and glucokina,!ce In liver mitochondria during hibernation and at the time of awakening of these animals. Hqemxo kinase activity in the liver and muscles of wakeful susliks was fbund -i:o be mich. higher than in such laboratory animale as rabbits or rate. Also* ite'distribution between the cell fractions differed from that In the Laboratory animalij. Tranalate&~__;,; Card 0 7-- L 57476-65, ACCESSION HR: AP5014190 into protein content of the fractions, hexokinase activit was move intense in the liver mitochondria of the susliks. However, it was only slightly higher in the sol its uble liver fraction of the susliks than in the rats and rabbits. As In the rabb and rats, glucokinase activity In the susliks was concentrated mainly in the solubl iver fraction. No gluookinase was found in the muscles of the suslikv. Hexokinase 1 activity in the liver mitochondria of hibernating suslike was less by a factor of 5.5 when compared with wakeful animals, whereas glucokinase activity decreased only slightly during hibernation. When the animals were awakened, hexokinave activi ty in the mitochondria increased sharply within 12-15 minutes, although body tempera- ture rose insignificantly. Thereafter, hexokinase activity continued -to increase in parallel with the rise in body temperature. Glucokinase activity in the mito- chondria. diminished during hibernation but tended to increase when the animals were awakened. The high hexokinase activity in the liver and muscles of waAeful susl is regarded by the authors as a form qf adaptation. OrIg, art. has-. 2 figures, 1 table.
