The method used for the construction of the asymmetric shapes which are arbitrarily close to the given asymmetric shape followed natural- ly from the iteration method used for the calculation of the equil- ibrium solution. Three closely asymmetrical shapes were calculated a-long with each symmetrical figure. The results of the calcula- tions are compared with experiment on the basis of the quasistatic model of nuclear fission. Although of the three types of asymmetri- cal deformations chosen the one corresponding to the middle of the neck comes close to being related to the asymmetry of the fission of U, Pu, and other heavy nuclei. It is shown that the position of the maximum of the asymmetric peak in the distribution of the frag- ments with respect to mass can be governed by relatively small factors which are accidental from the point of view of the quasi- classical model, and in particular by the possibility of formation Card 2/3 ACCESSION NR: AP4009111 z of shells in the fragments. The basic equation is 2J + i. eX 2yTn (IT)% The anomaly in the nucl'ear 1;vel density that is associated with the phase transi- tion is found to occur in an interval no smaller than 1.5-2 Mev. In this interval the nuclear level density changes by far more than the value of the "jump." Thus, it makes no sense to speak of the possibility of observing the phase "jump" or dis- continuity in the level density. The level density in the nucleus is more than an order of magnitude less than in the Fermi-gas picture. Thus, additional study of pair corTelation is very important for interpretation of the level density in the excited nucleus. Orig. art. has*.- I figure, 1 table, 19 formulas. With this assumption, the present authors use the Nilsson level scheme to calculate the shell correction to the "liquid drop energy" of the nucleus as a function of the number of nucleons and deformations. The magnitude of this correction is in agreement with the well-known semiempiric formulas for nuclei mass. The calculation of the deformation of the nuclei and the bound- aries of the deformation regions are also in agreement with the experiment. The pairing energy is taken into account, but does not have a considerable effect. 10rig. art. has: 5 figures and3l formulas. Starting from this point, Nilsson's scale of levels is used for calculating the shell model correction to the "liquid-drop energy" of the nucleus as a function of the occupation number and', deformation. Its value agrees with the well-known correction to the serniempirical formula for nuclear masses. The installation uses assemblies of fuel elements of the VVR-M research reactor; 4he moderator is ordinary water; the side reflector is made from the beryllium'l'ivflectors of the VVR-M reactor. The stand is located in a separate building. The radioactive zone is separated from the control panel by one meter of concrete shielding. The installation is equipped with sensitive monitoring and measuring systems as well as with systems for automa- tic and remote control. All precautions have been taken to assure reliable nuclear UDC: 621.039.572 Card 1/3 L 14219-66 ACC UR: AP6005535 0 safety and automatic control of the critical assemblies. A dc amplifier is connect, ed to a galvanometer for monitoring currents in the ionization chamber down to 10-12 am*P. Two recording potentiometers and a pulse rate counter are used for moni- toring the power level. The instruments give reliable readings below the subcriti- cal power level. Automatic control of the process is possible during operation at ,a power of more than 0.03 w which corresponds to an average thermal neutron flux- of about 0.4-106 neutrons/cm2-sec. The automatic regulator consists of two KNK-56 ionization chambers connected in parallel, a potentiometric power controller with a high impedance input and a steel absorber, an electronic amplifier and 'an amplidyne. This automatic regulator is extremely convenient for operation with cri-' tical assemblies. It may be used for rapid compensation of a chain reaction at lizeroff power levels and for calibration of control rods. The unit increases work safety and accuracy of holding a constant power level when detectors are activated. In addition to the steel absorber in the automatic regulator, chain reaction may be controlled by two or three boron remote control rods. An emergency signal auto- matically brings these rods together with three emergency safety rods into the radio- active zone of the assembly. All control and safety rods are moved by servo drives which are connected to selsyns and position indicators. operational experience at Card 2/3 L 1h219-66 ACC NR: AP6005A7-7 0 the Institute of Physics has shown that the test stand is a versatile tool which may be conveniently used for experimental research in physics and nuclear engineer- ing. The 19 patients t with skin injuries were treated by direci application of the pAste to the sicin with bandages. The 26 patients with mucous membrane injuries (rectitis, cystitis, and colpitis) were treated by irrigation of injured sections with the paste dissolved in a 1% novocaine solution. Chlorophyll-carotene paste was found therapeutichlly effective in all cases. Length of treatment depended on exient of radiation injury. Card 1/2 ACCESSION NR: AP4003129 For radiation skin injuries, the periods were 10 days for stage II and u-o to a y5ear for s-~age III. For radiation mucous injuries., the perioas were -10 days .for first degree, 2 weeks-1121 mos for second J do-roe, and 1-6 mos for third degree. Chlorophyll-carotene paste quickly clears the injured surface of necrotic stratifications and stiraulates the developl-,10nt of granulation tiSsue and epithelization which promotes healing. While the great majority remained able to work, all suf- fered impairment, in some degree, of the cardiovascular, nervous, and endocrine systems. The cardiovascular disorders were attributed not only to the radiation, but also to the climacteric syndrome induced by endocrine dys5inction. Local: [Card 1/2 L 53969-65 ACCESSION NR: AP5011231 radiation lesions were dismissed as a factor. Figure 1 shows the topographical distribution of the SH- and S- S -groups in the sensible and motor neui-onc. Table 1 gives the relative reaction intensity (from + -;'-0 -i-+++) of various components of the pzotoplasm of these cells. Column A shows the results of ann immediate dst--_rminEA,--_!on C.- the SH-groups after a fixation wlth formalin; in coll-cmn B results are given after a previcu,, treatment with 1)," trichloroacetic acid (in ordel- to reveal the so-called rz~.shed SH-groups which are bound to the pi-otelns); cc-lumn V cc-TitaIns results after a treatment with 10,~f; KCIT-solution ('~u2inlg ~_'o Card 1/3 min) or with 100/4 Ila2SO -solution before fixing in order -"-c,, transfer the S-S_grou~s into Sli-groui~s. The cytoplasm of the mo,tor cells contains SH-groups to a small extent (type A. visible immediately after treatment with formalin) or to a somewhat larpr axtent (type B - af-,.er trichloroacetic acid) or it -onta--na also S-S-ro~_,ps. The cytoplasm of the sensible cells contains a relatively large amount of SH-groups of the A-type and hardly any S_S-Zrcu-,s and SH-groups of the B-type. The tigroid of the motor cells reacts intensively upon S-S-groups and SH-groups of the type A and B. The reaction of the tigroid of the sensible cells on all mentioned groups is negative. Nuclei of the mctcr (-;e'-13 react intensively upon all 3 grouPs. In the nuclei of -Vhe Card 2/3 sensible cells there are only traces of SH-groups of the Cytochemistry of the Thiol-gronps of the Sensible and Motor Neurons SOV/20-125-3-50/63 type B. The nucleolus of the motor cells is relatively rich in SH-groups of the A-type, contains, however, only small amounts of the B-type. There is a lack of SH-groupsq whereas the nucleoli of the sensible cells are very rich in the S11-groups of the A-type. There are few of the type B, S-S-groups lack. The neurites of the motor cells do not perform any remarkable reaction upon the two groups. The dendrites of the motor cells perform the same reaction as cytoplasm upon the SH-groups of the B-type and upon the S-S-groups; the reaction upon the A-type of the former is much weaker. Thus, the data of previous papers are completed (Refs 16-18). The pJaradoxal weakening of the reaction in several cases (Table 1) after KC'N-treatment requires a special investigation. There are 1 figure, I table, and 18 references, 3 of which are Scviet. ASSOCIATION: Moskovskiy gosudarstvennyy universitet im. N1. V. Lomonosova (Moscow State University imeni Yt. V.
