High values (Z0 to 36) of the secondary- emission ratio (SER) were observed at room temperature and at a primary -electron maximum energy of 1. 5-Z kev. Plots of SER vs. primary -electron energy (for thin and thick active ilayers) and v9. ambient temperature (- 190 +360K) are presented. It is found that the multi-alkali cathodes have a great depth of emergence of secondary electrons; Card I /Z L '.3 62) 6-5 AC ESSION NR: AP5007094 C they behave like efficient dielectrics. TITLEt Inelastic Electron Reflection%nd Secondary Electron Emission an Activated CuAlMg Alloy in the Region of Frimary Electron Energies of From 0.5 to 20 kev PERIODICAL: Fizika tverdogo tela, 1960, Vol. 2, No. 6, pp. 1328-1332 TEXT: A parallel investigation of the secondary emission properties and the inelastic electron reflection from dielectric films fastened on to a metal base makes it possible to estimate the effective emission depth of secondary electrons. The activated CuAlMg had a surface film of MgO, produced in consequence of the diffusion of magnesium and heating in an oxidizing medium. By varying the temperature and the duration of heating films of various thicknesses were obtained. On such samples the authors measured the coefficient of secondary electron emission a and the coefficient of the inelastic electron reflection I by employing a static method at 3500C. The experiments were carried out in a quasi-spherical condenser with a high-voltage electron gun and an antidynatron grid. The I-value between 15 and 16% was character- istic of the MgO-layer. At EP . 20 kev the curves for activated and non-activated samples had a very similar course, % being = 30%. An estimation of the emission depth of the inelastically reflected elec- trons (which was equal to half the range of the electrons), shows good agreement with the results obtained by other authors. For the thickness of the MgO-layer one obtains 500 to 600 A. The results obtained by experiments carried out with different film thicknesses (activation between 1 min and 1 hour) are discussed in the following. Fig. 2 shows the functions d(Ep) and -I(EP) for 4 films of different thickness. The dmax of all samples was about 10 to 13. With the duration of activation E*increases from 1-3 to 4.3 kev, i.e., film thickness increases (if the p effective range of the electrons in MgO equals the double film thickness, Card 2/3 A/ 81656 Inelastic Electron Reflection and Secondary S/181/60/002/06/46/050 Electron Emission of an Activated CuAlMg Alloy B006/BO56 in the Region of Primary Electron Energies of From 0.5 to 20 kev Ep . This research examines the effect of the Mg content and of a third component, such as rare-earth elements, on the activation and secondary ernissic -. c.;' an Al-'Mg alloy. First, effective emitters (Clin"aX = 9 to 12) were prepared from Al-A,rg alloys containing 0. 15% min Mg by activation in oxygen at 450-470'C Md 10-1 mm Hg for I to 4 hrs. Then, Al-Mg alloys containing 0. 003 to 0. 05% Mg plus La or Nd were activated to show the effect of the third component on emitter formation. Alloys containing 0. 5 to 67o La and >0. W!o Mg proved to be as good emitters as alloys containing up to 25,16 111g. Effective emitters were also ob- tained with the addition of Nd to alloys containing 0. 02 to 0. 04% Mg. It is assumed that La or Nd tends to increase the rate of Mg diffusion, which in turn leads to selective Mg oxidation on the surface. The third component can be used as an additional control of the diffusion-oxidation processes. which lead to the formation of an effective secondary emitter on the surface of the alloy. Long term forecasting is much more dif- ficult in Central Europe than it is in tropical and subtropical climates. Succesaful forecasting must ba based on statistical e- valuation of moasured data and a satisfactory interpretation of these data based on physics. The forecasting should forn a special branch of meteorology, somewhat between synoptics and climatology, The forecasting should be based mainly on the study of the influen- ces of the sun; although the sun constant changes only within 2.2%. and monthly changes amount to 0.2 - 0.5%, they are important enough to cause substantial circulation anomalies. Ultraviolet radiation is very important in this respect. Influence of sun spots upon the weather in Central Europe in the last 200 years is discussed.
