TIM: Neasurements of layer width were carried out in dis-
charge tubes 2 cm, in dimeter and 50-70 cm long. The width depends
linearly on the field frequency. The product-of longitudinal elec-
tric field strength E on the positive column and the layer width
in resonance was compiited in order to distinguish between the three
layer types (this product i_, constant for each type). The results
show that all three types (13-, r- and s-; L. ilcka'rek, 11. Novak,
Czech. J. 11hys. 9, 1959, 401) can be excited in Na. There is I

1962, 919-929
The possibility was investigated of using the dis-
turbance Droduced by a local IIF field in systematic studies of sta-
tionary a~d travelirig striation of the discharge in inert gases. Irt
the nethod developed by the authors the !V field interacted upon a
litaited part of tho positive column of a d-c discharge originating
stationary and traveling strata and striation waves. Discharge tubes
50 to 80 cm long were used applyin-, across thet,'I a voltage adjustable
frori-i 200 V to 3 IcV. The discharrre current was controlled and stabil-
iLed with two pentodc tuber, in series tritii nic disc!-rge tube. The
1winous pattern of the discharge was observed visually and tubes

could be moved along ind across thn discharge tube by means of photo-
electronmultiplicr. A toroidal resonator ol3crating in the 40 cm
wavelcncrth-band provided the local I-IF excitation. A double structure
was OL)Gervcd in the stationary strata differing both in shape and M-
plituac; the anplitude of on-- rtruct-urc against che other one increa-
sed with increasing di-charge current, but at the smile time the sta-
tionary strata were independent of the amount of 11F pq-vrer absorbed
by the plasma. The striation waves were found to originate in-the
region of the 1-117 excitation of the positive column. The resonance
frequency of the moving strata was investigated as a function of the
discharge currelit as well as the dependence of the wavelength upon
the frequency, The frequency of the traveling strata in the stria-
tion. unive and the resonance frequency of the artificially produced
traveling strata were found to be equal vrithin the accuracy of the
measurements. The pattern of the discharge could be controlled by
changing the modulation of the HV field. It was concluded that the
possibility of employing the UP disturbance in the studies of stria-
tion in d-c discharges has been established. There are 7 figures
and I table.

ABSTRACiT; The paper daucribes a method-which makes-it possible to
investigate the form of moving striations not only along the -axis
of the discharge, but also in the radial direction. The method was
devised with a view ~f-spectr6sc;pic investigation of movirz . stria-
tions. This requires the synchronizatiqn of the'detecting equipment
with the frequency of the moving striations. The setup ensures
perfect synchronization of the frequenc

TITLE: On the Desulfurization of Cast Iron by Magnesium (0 desull-
furatsii chuguna magniyem)
PERIODICAL: Liteynoye proizvodstvo, 1958, Nr 11, pp 15-17 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: Contradictory opinions exist in works published on the
problem of desulfurization by magnesium of cast iron (Ref.
1-5). TsNIITMASh carried out investigations on the desul-
furization of cast iron with the use of radioactive isotopes
and by autoradiography. The theory on the inefficiency of
liquid cast iron desulfurization by treating it with mag-
nesium is rejected, and it is proved that all the sulfur,
bound with magnesium into magnesium sulfides or more com-
plex compounds, passes from the metal into the slag and
partially into the upper layers of the cast metal. It is
concluded that a particularly careful separation of the
slag, formed after addition of magnesium, from the liquid
metal is necessary to ensure a full desulfurization, which

is independent of the subsequent heating.

PJ-,',~IODICAL: Svarochnoye proizvodstvo, 1959, TIr 4, PP 7 - 12 (USSR)
AB5TRACT: 7he article contains a detailed description of experiments
carried out by the authors in studying the migraticn of
carbon in welded joints. This can be a cause of cracks
fGrming at the joints of pipelines welded at high tempera-
tures and sometimes leads to the destruction of a joint.
The possibility of such migra, tion was discovered in other
projects. (Ref. 1 - 7). The phenomenon was studied on
two metallurgically different weld connections with the
use of a radioactive carbon isotope (cl4) and autoradio-
graphy. The study resulted in the following conclusions:
Card 112 1) there was no diffusion of carbon in the fusion zone

in the initial state of the weld joint; 2) stabilization
of the Joints of steel :~I 257 for 20 hours at 8001C result-
ed in appreciable diffusion of carbon from the base metal in-
to the weld metal. The carbon content in the narrow zone
adjacent to the line of fusion (of about 0.1 mm width)
diminished from 0.11 and 0.06i'o' and correspondingly increased
.in the weld metal at the line of fusion; 3) in the case of
no chemical difference between the base and the weld metal
(steel 'T' was used in the experiments) stabilization caused
considerably less noticeable non-uniformity of carbon
distribution; 4) austenization gave considerably less non-
uniformity of carbon distribution 'than stabilization, in
the case of steel "E1257", and no directed carbon diffusion
at all in the other steel ("T', or the electrodes "TsT-7");
5) aging of specimens of "E1257" steel, stressed or not,
at 580 to 6000C for 1000 hours resulted in appreciable
carbon diffusion into the weld metal, although the carbon
redistribution in "his case was considerably less intensive
than in heat-treated (stabilized or austenized' specimens,
Card 2/3 that were not subjected to subsequent aging. In the other

steel there was again no apparent diffusion after
aging; aging after heat treatment (austenization and
stabilization) for 1000 hours at 580 - 6000C, in stressed
and non-stressed condition, had no appreciable effect on
distribution of carbon in the area of welding; 7) the
intensity of carbon diffusion in welded connections of
austenitic steel is determined to a large degree by the
difference in the content of carbide-forming elements in
the bqse and the weld metal; 8) further study of the
effect of the diffusion processes developing in welded
joints in austenitic steel under heat treatment and in
operation is necessary. There are 4 sets of autoradio-
-'rams' 6 graphs, 2 diagrams, 4 tables, and 12 Soviet
