ABSTRACT The recently published geobotaAical map of the USbS (scal.e: 1#4,ooo-ooo)
with an explanatory text comprising two volumes "The Plants of the USSR"
surpasses everything hitherto published in the world on ihe geograpki-
cal distribution of filants. No other geobotanical map evf5r extended over
so vast area of the globe nor was one ever produced in ~Ws scale, in
suck a quality, or witi so many details. The minutest details and pe-
culiarities characterizing the plants covering txe territory of the
USSR gave rise to extVns$ve researck work.
The map was produced under tkesuperviaion of B.N.Lavreako, member of the
Academy, and Professor W.B.Sockava.
The map consists of 8 large skeets with lo9 colored parts. It it; subdi-
vided into sections according to the nature of the vegal.-ation growing
on the territory concerned as e. forests, meadowlands awskland, step-
pes, deserts, agricultural areas.. mountain plants.. etcl Sack of these
sections has several colored maps and charts. Special signs indicate the
special mature of the vegetation and the occurrence of certain plants.-
Everything has been mapped out with, the utmost accuracy and the quali-
ty of the maps is excellent. The explanatory text gives a detailed de-
scription of the vegetation of the Soviet Union. Sack eiescription cor-
