To study their fungicidal properties, 6-carboxy-methoxy--and 5-carboxy-
methoxy-3-methyl-benzofuran (I and II), as well as 3-(61-carboxy-methoxy-
benzofuryl-31)_ and 3-(5'-carboxy-mathoxy-benzofuryl-3l)-1,1,1-&'richloro--
2-hydroxy-propane (III and IV) were synthesized. 2,4-di-(carboxy-methov)j
2-hydroxY-4-carboxy-methoxy-, 2,5-di-(carboxy-methoxy)- and 2-hydrov-5~
carboxy-methoxy-acetophenone (VI-IX) were obtained by boiling the Na salts
A -dihydroxy-acetophenone with
of 2 -dihydroxy-acetophenone (V) and of 2,5
ClCH 2COONa; compounds VI and-VIII gave, with (CH 3CO)~O, I and II. A--
biological investigation of the compounds I-IV, VI-IX, and fu,-ther of
(Xa-e) showed -:that the introduction of the HOOCCH 20 group does not chanip
the antimycotic properties. A mixture of 0.2 mole of NaOH in 20 ml of
water, 04 mole.-.of ClCH2COONa in 100 ml of-water, and 0.1 mole of V is
heated for 1 hr, alkalized with 30 ~3 NaOH, and boiled for 3 hrs. VI,

'Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian suahmary modified] Sor.;e problems of unexpected
deaths occurring among hospitalized patients are discussed on the basis o.",
the relevant legal regulations. In the case of unexpected death, the autopsy
must be performed by public authorities the duty of whom is the examination
and evaluation of an eventual responsibility for the death. Unexpected deaths
are defined as those where the thought of responsibility may arise. Some ex-
amples are cited and the cases are discussed in accordance with the legal
regulations in the following grouping: a) deaths related to violence, b)
deaths in the course of or becau-se of the lack of medical treatment, c) un-
explained deaths, d) some questions related to the practice of hospitaliza-
tion which may arise in cases when an unknown person is found dead. The pro-
cedure to be followed in the case of unexpected aeath is described including
the duties of individual professionals and the so-called reporti.ng-back
requirempnt from the physician who performs the autopsy. As general require-

Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summary modified] Food poisoning caused by
Salmonella bareilly was spread by products of a pastry shop causirq; 51 a-
cute and several latent cases of infection. Incubation tilrae was 4-27 hours
and the disease lasted 4-14 days. Six patients needed hospitalization, but
no fatality occurred.Salmonella was cultured from pastry samples and from
the feces of those who consumed the food. The number of positive tests de-
creased gradually but were present among former patients as much as 200
days later. The clinical symptoms responded well to treatment while the
bacterium excretion did not. The mass food poisoning has turned into an
epidemic but the host could not be found. Attention is called to the role
of food in the spreading of Salmonella infections, which are only slightly
