Postmortem examination following an unexpected death at the beginning of a myoma
ope ration revealed a latent tb of the pituitary gland. It is emphasized that deaths
during operations are usually caused by latent changes in organs like the pituitary
gland; the changes are independent of the disease that formed the basis for the
operation, and they have no pathogenic connection with, or present a contraindica-
tion for, operation. In order to determine whether any technical mistakes had been
made in the anaesthesia or during the operation, all organs should be examined
thoroughly both microscopically and macroscopically with special reference to the
hontional apparatus which is valuable for the defence mechanism of the orgamism.

Abstract : A series method is developed for solving the Poisson.
equation as applied to electrostatic problems. The case
is considered, vhen the distritution of_the charge can
be written with the aid of the Dirac 0 -function (i.e.,
point-like distribution, surface cr linear distribution,
if it has a suitable symetry., etc.). The solution of
the Poisson equation is sought in the form of a series
in eigenfunctions of the corresponding boundary problem.

ced to a form convenient for use. The general method
develoyed to illustrated with three examples:
1) it is shown, with a cylindrical capacitor as an ex-
ample, how a solution obtained by this method Epes into
the well known analytic solution; 2) for a special con-
figuration of electrodes (three charged rings, symmetri-
c&Uy arranged in a grounded cylinder) a comparison is
made between the computed distribution of the potential
with the experimental one, obtained in an electrolytic
bath; good agreement between theory and experiment is
observed; 3) a calculation is made of the distribution
of the potential pf a two-cylinder electron-optical lens

ASISTRACT : The wave function and the energy of the HF
molecule have been calculated on the basis of the
united atom approximation. The orthogonal Is,
2s, 2px, 2py, and 2pz AO's of F are used with a
variable effective charge [scale factor] and
internuclear distance to obtain concentric M01s.
The HF energy calculated from the antisymmetric
wave function is -99.016 a.u. (compared to the
experimental value of -100.489 a.u:). The scale
factors for the above-enumerated AO's are 8.7,

TEXT; It is shown that satisfactory values can be obtained for the bind-
ing energy of the H2 molecule in the ground state by using the molecular orbital
method and the wave functions of the H+ ion, Good results are already achieved
when using the hydrogen wave functions of the Is type with one center. If a
linear combination of functions of the types Is, 2s, and 3d is used, goodestimates
are also obtained for the interatomic distance.

Abstract : The Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden of the Kola Branch of
the Academy of Sciences USSR raises the question of the
necessity of a precise classification of decorative plants,
The words, "variety", 11formil JI 11variant", are not being
.used correctly. It is indicated that the term "variant"
hss different meanings, depending upon whether it is used
for cultivated decorative plants or wild ones. It is pro-
posed that, for decorative plants., it be replaced by the
term "garden form,". There is not yet a commonly accepted
meaning for the word "variety", as applied to decorative
plants. Decorative plants should be classified on the

genetic principle. A scheme of development oi the basis
of time of the decorative species is proposed as well
as a sf.:heme of claasifying varieties of annual asters on
the basis of the first scheme. The complicated classifi-
cation is necessary only for polymorphic species of deco-
rative plants; it can be simplified for species which
have a smeLU number of forms.
