Abstract: A solution is given of the differential equations
governing heat exchange during the free and constrained
flow of fluids over flat plates, taking into account
solidification and fusion phenomena. It is shown that
the phenomena investigated have a marked effect on the
value of the heat transfer coefficient. The solutions
presented make possible the inclusion of the effects
produced by the physical properties of the fluids
particularly of the Pr number.

ABSTRACT: The paper submits a description and the results of an experi-
mental investigation on the heat exchange during the melting of ice
in freely-moving water. Nusselt' s criterion was determined in
relation to the Grashof and Prandtl criteria from the time rate of
the decrease of the radii of ice cylinders or spheres; it was
assumed that during this process the entire latent heat of fusion of
the ice is liberated. The effect of the anomaly in the coefficient
of thermal expansion of water upon the heat-transfer coefficient
was investigated. The time dependence of the model diameter was
also investigated.
