TITLE: Effect of bismuWon sensitivity of silver bromide photographic emulsions iSOURCE: Bulgarska akademiya na naukite. Institut po fizikokhimiya. Izvestiya, v. 2, 1962, 219-22b TOPIC TAGS: bismuth, photosensitivity, silver bromide, photographic emulsion, desensitization, pH, Complexon ABSTRACT: The extremely strong desensitization effect of minute quantities of bismuth, hitherto unreported in bibliography is investigated. Experiments were conducted on photosensitive emulsions, compounded by simple formulation and technique, in order to ascertain factors underlying the conditions in which bis- muth exerts this effect. Results are shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Enclosures 1-6. It is concluded that the desenuitization effect of bismuth: 1) occurs in presence of bismuth of the order of a thousandth of a percent in silver nitrate, reducing sensitivity of acid bromide emulsions by 2 or 3 orders. Results are identical when bismuth is added to solutions of halides; 2) occurs 1Card 1L 18435-63 'ACCESSION VR: AT3002253 only when bismuth is included in solid phase of emulsion. Such inclusion is not superficial and bismuth cannot be removed by washing. When chlorine ions are included in solid phase of emulsion, the effect is sharply lowered; 3) occurs only T at low values of pH of the emulsion when bismuth enters into composition of emulsion crystals as trivalent ions; at pH over 5 the effect practically dis- ;appears; 4) can be eliminated by adding small quantities of Complexon III prior .to emulsification, thereby blocking the bismuth ion. Comparing the. shape curves of a lon_-itu- dinal section of a tree with the growth curve, the simi- larity of the two curves and their common "O""-shape become evident. Functions with "S11-shape curves are used as analytical expressions of natural phenomena including the phenomena of r-rowth. The efforts to find analytical expressions for the development of a tree Card 112 1 -59-1-3/67 YUG/1 Connection Between the Function of and the ~,-unctio_- Of Shape shape have been without results. The transformation of the growth functions into shape functions are shown. by three examples through which new relations of shape-s were found, Practical values of these data were ob- tained by applying these relations to the i3urkhardt tables and parameters, diameters and deviations calcu- lated. Functionq with 'IS"-shaped curves are frequent- ly used to balance empirical data in biology, physics, etc. There are 5 tables, 9 graphs, and 9 references of which 7 are Yugoslav, 1 German and 1 English. .LISSOCIATION: Eumarski fah-ultet Univerziteta u Beogradu (Dept. of Forestry at Beograd University). This can be explained by the fact that stretching of muscles attached to the hyoid bone does not occur in all cases. Tho (JUality Of the hyoid bone is also important. Since the Droblein hos not boon sufficiently elucidated and bearing in mind its forensic significance, the authors 'believe that in all cases of violent death due to injuries of' the body and especially of the head caused by mechanical tools (occurring particularly in traffic accidents), the hyoid bone and the upper horns of the thyroid cartilage should be examined. Recrudescences during treat- ment and relapses after apparent recovery were quite common when 8treptomycin wnH the only drug employed. Unfortunately, even prolonged treatment with a com- bination of drugs failed to.climinate theme mishaps. Among 1,250 cnmeo treated since 1950, recrudeacences were noted in 86 and relapses In 67 patients. Four cases relapsed twice. Provided the diagnosis is made in time and adequate and long, combined antibacterial and steroid treatment is given, 80-90% of the patients may be expected to recover. In tuberculous meningitis the brain itself is involved and signs of encephalitis rarely cause diagnostic difficulties. Certain signs which are not commonly described are: (1) In one-fifth of conva.'.eficent cases there is a radial deviation of the closed fist when the arm is held extended horizontally; the symptom is usually unilateral. (2) A narrowing of the palpebral fissures is found In 6% of cases, due neither to lesions of the facial nerve nor of the orbicularis muscle, (3) Elevation of the eyebrows (usually bilateral) upon fixing a finger mov- ing laterally In front of the patient is present in 11% of cases. This sign persists for years. (4) There is an absence of autornatic swinging of one arm in walking, sug- gestive of paralysis, but without paralysis, in 5114 of convalescents, as well as failure of certain other automatic movements. These signs, wbich often occur to- gether in the same patient, have no aetiologicat or localizing value but are t3ken to indicate a lesion in the grey matter. At the be- ginning, treatment contilsted enerally in suboccipital idministration of small do- aes of streptomycin. In 1047)~148, 200 of 300 pntientm were treated nolely witht occipital injections of 0.10 g. streptomycin. In it total quantity of 2 g. After 195.1, treatment consisted in streptomycin. PAS. thiacetazone, isonlazid. and hormone therapy. In 1951, the proportion of cures reached 33.337o, but in 1056, this figure increased to 8476. In the article it is pointed out that favourable results can be ob- tained only if the illness is diagnosed as early as possible. and a specific treatment is applied in tirne.
