TITLE: Die Forging Undercut Work Pieces

TEXT: This is the first part of the paper, the second part
is published in No.11, pp.494-497.
The forging of undercut work pieces presents several problems and
typical solutions, taken from the literature, are discussed. The
undercut section is either forged straight and then bent over, or
it is forged in one operation in a sectioned die. In the latter
case, the die sections are usually moved by hand, causing delays
and inaccuracies. One solution of this problem, protected by
(unspecified) German and Hungarian patents, relates to the forging
of female fire-hose bayonet couplings in Al-Mg-Si alloy. The
difficulty there is the forging of undercut bosses (lugs) on the
inside of the union, with a smooth finish that obviates subsequent
machining. The material of the bosses is first forged as an axial
continuation of the union body and is then (after removing the
flash) forged into final shape, using a complex die set with
expanding internal mandrels (Fig.24). This union has a tensile

strength of 30-38 kg/mm2 and an elongation 2of 6-16% in the fully
heat treated condition against 16'20 kg/mm T.S. and 0-3% E of cast
and heat treated Al-Si alloy. Approximately 100 000 unions were
produced during the last three years. There are 27 figures, 1
table and 9 references! 5 Hungarian and 4 non-Hungarian.
