ABSTRACT: The article discusses photo emf in samples prepared by evaporating selenium
Onto a plexiglass substrate in which two gold electrodes are fixed. The selenium com-
pl~tely covers one electrode while the other is left exposed. The sample is then expos.
ed.to mercury vapor which produces a layer of HgSe on the surface of the sample in can,
tact with the exposed electrode. Spectral response is measured with illumination from
the direction of the HgSe layer and from the direction of the substrate. It is con-
eluded that the photo amf consists of a longitudinal and a transverse part, the former
r aris'ing from illumination of only one half of the sample, the latter arising from il-
