and conversion). The conference was convenbd at the DOm v6deck~ch
pracovnik-A J. E. Purkyh6 (J. E. Purkyn6 House of Scientific Workers)
in Liblice on March 21-23, 1961. The purpose of the conference was
to evaluate the potentialities of some new methods of direct con-
version to electricity of heat and chemical energy, and of some new
primary sources of power for the future expansion of the Czechoslovak

economy. The conference was attended by more than 80 specialists
from the fields of theoretical andapplied research.' Introductory
reports were delivered by: Jan Smetana, Academician, Chairman of the
technickd sekee OSAV (Technical Section,'Czechoslovak AS); Jan
OEolsob6, Engineer', Corresponding member, Czechoslovak AS; Rudolf
Kubinec, Engineer, Director of the V~zkumnj~ energetickj' U'stav (Power
Research Institute) in behalf of the Ministry of Fuels and Power;
and J. Holubec, Engineer, in behalf of the odbor paliv a energetiky
fJV KS6 (Fuels and Power Section, OV KS6). A total of nine papers
was presented dealing with the following specific problems: (1)
MdjKnetohydrodynamic method of converting heat to electricity; (2)
Thermionic emission method; (3) Thermoelectric method; (4) Fuel cells;
(5) Utilization of some unconventional sources'ot energy, such as
controlled thermonuclear fusion and solar energy. The results and
conclusions.of the conference were briefly summarized by J. Vysko6,
Engineer, and Ist Vice-Chairman of the State Committee for Technical
Development. The conference arrived at the conclusion that Czecho-
slovak research due to its limited possibilities and resources,
limit itself to the fields of pure science and basic research in

close cooperation with the USSR and other Soviet-bloc countries.
In this respect the conference made the following recommendations:
(1) To include into the :besearch plan the'-study of' direct conver-
sion of heat to electricity by the magnetolliydrodynEmic method; (2)
To intensify theoretical and experi&ental research into high-tempe-
rature plasma; (3) Tostudy new approaches towards direct- conver-
sion of solar energy for low-power qpplications; (4) To conduct
research on various problems associated with the new methods of
energy generation and conversion, such as achievemit of high tempera-
tures by combustion of fossil and chemical fuels; thermophysical 'and
chemical properties of hightempergture environs; refractory mate-
rials for temperatures above 3,000_0; new semiconductors and transis
tors with specific properties; ionization of gases at high tempera-
tures; and problems of flow; (5)'To-'establish special scientific-re-
search centers for study of the above problems; (6) To arrange for a
broader conference of experts from the USSR and other Soviet-bloc
countries in the second half of 1961 which should discuss Interna-
tional cooperation in the solution of the above scientific-research
problems.

Abstract ; This is t, cornunication on the u-.i of sananycin in 15 cases
of advanced Hodgkin's disease in e-1sages between 100 and 200
gawta given I.V. twice a day, the t.,hal doso per course of
treatment being 10-15 mg. In the ma.vity of thopationts
there were side offoctaq such as ulcointivo stomatitis, gics-
sitisp ote. which were explained by +h.. deficiency in group
B vitamins. There was improvement in ;~ patients lasting from
5-10 wooka. A transient effect was noticed in 10 cases, a
prolonged remission in one case of combined treatment, end
there was no effect in one Case. The authors recommend that
sananyoin be used in generalized forms of Hodgidnis disease
(with depressed functions of the bcno marrow) whLah are re-
