Abstract Description of the results of investigations of the effects
of different organophosphorus compounds on the wear-redu-
cing, detergent and anticorrosion characteristics of oil.
It was found that lower trialkyl-trithiophosphites and tri-
alkyl thiophosphates, containing C 3-C5 alkyls, improve the

lubricating properties of oil to a greater extent than ad-
ditives of this type containing long hydrocarbon radicals
(for example, n-trioctadecyl trithiophosphate); trialkyl
thiophosphates are less active than the trialkyl trithio-
phosphites. The presence of phosphorus in the molecule
of additives of this type, affects,, first of all, their ca-
pacity of increasing the critical load of the oil, while
the presence of sulfur -- the capacity of improring the
breaking-in of metal surfaces subjected to friction. It
was ascertained that esters of chloromethyl- and beta-chlo-
rethyl phosphinic: and thiophosphinic acids, approximate,
as wear-reducing additives, the most active thiophosphites
and thiophosphates; the action of chlorine in compounds
of this type is analogous to the effect of sulfur on the
activity of thiophosphites and thiophosphates. The

The possibility is considered of utilizing the sailts of
acid eaters of dithio-phosphoric and phosphoric acids, as
composite additives which improve at the same time the de-
tergent and the anticorrosion characteristics of the oil.
It is shown that in the series di-n-butyl-, di-isoamyl-,
di-n-decyl- and di-n-octadecyl di-thiophosphates of barium
and nickel, the activity of the enumerated compounds, as
detergent and anticorrosion agents, increases with increa-
sing size of the hydrocarbon radicals; compounds contai-
ning branched radicals are slightly less active than the
compounds containing radicals with a normal carbon-atom
chain. The principal element that determines the detergent
properties of the high-molecular dialkyl-dithiophosphate
salts, is the atom of the metal; while the principal car-
rier of anticorrosion characteristics of the compounds of

TEXT: The authors synthetized the wear-reducing properties of Cl,
S and P compounds and aiso thio-phosphoroorganic and chlorophospho-
roorganic compounds. The anti-wear properties were examined by dis-
solving the additives in a highly refined mineral oil, viscosity
20.8 es at 500C. The concentr'ation of all the additives examined was
6 millinzoles per 100 g of oil. The four-ball machine was used as a
wear-tester with standard 12.7 mm diameter balls from 'dJX -9 (ShKh-9)
steel. The tests viere conducted at 600 rpm. It was shown that-the
high molecular weight esters and acids which were assumed to ha, 'e
adsorptional anti-wear mechanisms, were not effective durin- the
rubbing under high loads. Chlorinated esters'of stearic acid and

also fractions of chlorinated Daraffin wax reduced the wear conside-
rably above the seizure load, he best results were.obtained with
the wax fraction containing about 40 % Cl, the base oil cont -_ ining .
about 7 % of the additive. For a series of esters (R S) 3P and (H 0)3
PS the critical load that could be tolerated by the oil blend, de-
creased with the increasing length of the hydrocarbon radical R.
'Thus any.of the compounds with R = C3 - 05 coiild be considered as
possible additives. Trialkyl phosphates were less active as additi-
ves than trialkyl trithiophospha-'U*es. '."he presence of P and thiophos-
phate types exerted a predominant influen-ce on their capacity to in- 11~
crease the critical load. The presence of 3 improved the wear-redue-
ing properties at loads above the critical load. Chlorine in esters
of chloralkylphosp,horous acids acted in the same direction as S in
thiophosphites. Thus the presence in one compound of P and Cl or P
and S is very beneficial. The phosphite compounds RIPO (OR)2 having
a C-P link-, were Qonsiderably more actiVe than the compounds contain-
ing only alkoxy groups, such as phosphites. It was shown that com-
pounds containing the group - CC1 3 have high anti-wear activity.

twice of that for the base oil and decreased the wear considerably
in the region of high Loads* It was established that the specific
activity of the compounds containing 0013 group is due to a high
reactivity of Cl in the group with metal surfaces, on which a chlo-
ride film is formed. The wear reducing properties of additives of
the C01 3 P (OR)2 type is due to the simultaneous action of the reac-
tive Ci and P resulting in the formation of chlor.*de and phosphide

wear

TEXT: The relative effect on the seizing load (SL) and on the wear of a
number of Cl-, S-, and P-containing additives was studied on a 4-ball
friction machine. The additives were tested in the solution of a highly
refined mineral oil with a viscosity of 20.8 0st/50'C at a concentration
of 6 moles of additive per 100 g of oil. Oleic and stearic acids, as
well as methyl stearate, did not change the character of the wear-load
curve, nor increase the SL of the pure oil (69 kg). SL were determined for
the following additive solutions (in kg): methyl dichlorostearate, 126;
tetrachloronaphthalene, 126; chlorinated paraffin C 25H51 Cl, 79; much or

3 atoms in transition from (C 4 H90)3PO to (C 4H9S)3PS reduced the SL, but
decreased the wear with loads above SL. Particularly high SL were obtained
for compounds with molecules containing P and M 3 groups: (C 4 H90) 2P(O)CC13
(the SL is 2.5 times higher than for pure oil), (CC1 3CH20)3P (SL >300),
and tri-(trichloro-tert-butyl)-phosphite (SL> 300). At the same time

various antiwear additives consisting of high-molecular aliphatic esters
and organic compounds of S, P, and Cl. The authors employed solutions of
the additives (6 mmoles per 100 g) in highly pure mineral oil (viscosity
20.8 centistokes at 500C). Of no use under heavy load were additives the
effect of which was based on adsorption only (high-molecular esters and
higher fatty acids). Additives containing Cl (methyl esters of mono- and
dichloro stearic acid, tetrachloro naphthalene, fractions of chlorinated
paraffin) increased the critical load (CL) (the seizing load), and con-
siderably reduced the wear under loads higher than CL. Additives of the
types (RS)3 P and (RO)3PS were found to reduce CL with increasing length

of the alkyl, R(C 3 -C1.); efficient additives of these types should con-
tain R - C3 - C5Q (RS)3P proved to be more efficient than (RO)3PS, In
additives containing P and S, P mainly increased the CL while S decreased
the wear under loads above CL. Phosphinic esters, RIPO(OR )2' proved to be
more efficient than phosphoric esters containing no C-P bond. introduc-
tion of Cl in phosphinic and phosphoric esters increased the efficiency of
additives, and reduced the wear under loads above CL. Phosphinic and
phosphoric esters containing the CCI3 group were of utmost efficiency.
The effect of the CCI, group increasing the efficiency of antiwear addi-
tives was confirmed by the action of tetrachloro alkanes, OCI3(CH2)nCl
(n - 3 - 5). The authors discuss the mechanism of action of antivear
additives containing various active elements and groups. There are 21

The conversioris undergone by synthetic additives trialkylpbosphite, ti-ioctadecyl-
phosphite, tribuLyIphosphite;and tributyltrithiophosphite at elevated tem-
peratures have been studied. The results indicate that organophos-
phorus compounds on contact with metal at elevated temperatures
undergo chemical conversions accompanied by formation of metal
phosphides.

70 to 130OC'with thin layers of copper -(from 70 to 1000 it), obtained by
the method of evaporation copper in vacuum and deposited on a degreased

in the interaction of the solution I with copper films are formed which
contain S, P, and C. It is assumed that Iy on reacting with copper at an
increased temperature, decomposes according to the equation

forms (C 4H9S) ~Cu which, at an increased temperature, decomposes into
Cus + 2C 4Ha + H2S, and PH3 with copper forms phosphide. It is concluded
that the films which are formed in the interaction of I with copper contain
sulfide, phosphide, and marcaptide of copperp and the product of reaction

was noted that there exists a similarity in
the nature of changes of the blood1s protein
composition during lactation. It was establi-

cows is by 0.22 percent higher than in cows
during interlactation. During the course of
lactation the protein level declined insigni-
ficantly. At'tho beginning of lactation the
quantity of albumins was higher than the quan-
tity of globulins, but then it gradually do-
clinod, whereas the quantity of globulins in-6
creased and on the 6th, 7th, 8th month of
lactation they became equalized and the pro-
toin coefficient came close to 1 (0.93 - 0494).
The comparison of the blood's protein compo-
sition in cows with higher and lower milk
production did not show great differences;
however, the albumin quantity proved to be
higher for the first group. In cows with a
higher fat content of milk (they produce less

ABSTRACT: Viscometry and UV spectroscopy were used to study the polymerization rate
~pol of 4-vinylpyridine (VP) in aqueous solutions of polystyronesulfonic acid (PSSA)
and polyethylenesulfonic acid (PESA), both of which served as the matrices; vDol was
studied as a function of the degree of neutralization of the Dolymeric acids d. It
is shown that v-001 increases shar-oly as a approaches unity. On the basis of the
ostablishod kinbtic denendence of vDol on a, two -ooi~sible mechanisms of polymerization
of VP on PSSA and PESA are consider'ed. Both mechanisms follow from concepts according
to which there is either a possibility of a rigid fixing of VP molecules on the Doly-
i meric acids, or the oresonce of a sufficient mobility of VP molecules to allow migra-
tion along the chain of the macromolecular acid. The mechanism based on the second
of these concepts is confirmed exparimentally. Orig. art. hast 2 figures and 13
