ABSTRACT: The author attempts to describe the effect of the correlations between
the different letters of the alphabet of a given language on the quantity of In-
formation transmitted, the description being based on the simplest possible func-
tion of the distance of the correlation. His general Intent Is to derive a theore-
tical or at least a semi-theoretical formula based on a more or less acceptable
model of the statistical structure of the language. Since the Investigation Is
limited to the first approximation onlyp the properties of the language are des-
cribed In the most general:terms and by means of relatively simple analytical ex-
pressions, Distance of correlations and linguistic redundancy are considered.

obtained, and the mean distance of inter-letter correlations Is determined. The
author introduces the concept of the "granular" structure of the printed text;
that Is, the fact that It actually consists of Individual or "separate!' words.
The effect of this circumstance on linguistic predictability (with reference to
the works of Shannon) and on the non-monotonIcIty of derived probability curves

Serial microscopic investigations of 100 stomachs resected on account of gastric
ulcer revealed the presence of I IS ulcers. Ulcers up to 2 cm. in diameter situated
at the lesser curvature constituted 50% of the cases, ulcers larger than 2 cm. in
diameter constituting 25.5016. Carcinomatous degeneration at the edge of a peptic
ulcer was ascertained 7 times (5.9%). All theme cases were affected by ulcers
