S. Vaklinova et al., Compte rend* Acad* bulg, Sci., 17, 1964, No 11) that
when a chloroplast suspension is illuminated, hydroxylamino oxidizes to
nitrites and that this process Is connected with the absorption of molecular
oxygen by the air. It is of Interest to establish thu effect of certain
trace elements on the reaction of hydronylamino photooxidation In
chloroplast suspensions. ror thct put-pose use was made of Mn and Cuwhich
are known to participate In the transfrar of electrons,as well as of Ni
about which data are scanty. Cu2+, N11 Z./. and Mn2+ were given In the Oorm of
sulfates, and '.fn2+ as n:nO4. Chloropla;ts of broad beans, isolated In a
phosphate buffer with pH = 6.8,wGre used In the experiments. Different
quantities of the corresponding trace element were added to a determined
voluno of suspension. Hydroxylamine was then added, and the suspension was
Illuminated for 15 minutes. Experiments show that manganese, copper, and

nicical Ions produce a substantial effect on the reaction of hydroxyla:--In,~,
photooxidation. It is charactoristlc that each of the clement participates
in the reaction In a spocific mamner. I-Theroas manganese takes part Mora
diroctly, copper requires a combination with somo enzyme system. All
three elements are active donors of electrons, competitors of hydroxylamine.
Me Inhibition of the photooxidation reaction of hydroxylamino Is
indirect proof that manganese, copper, and nickel oxidize In a suspension

Abntract: [Cnglish article] Earlier Investigations Indicated (S. Vaklinova,
Compt. rend. Acad. bulg. Sci., 17, 1964, No 3, 282) that hydroxylaminc (M)
oxidizes to nitrite in a suspension of chloroplasts and their fr6r,-ments under
the influence of light. Recently, the role of protein containing iron
in a nonchemical form and with a rodox. potential (Eo = -0.432 V at p11 7.5)
with 100 V more negative than the redox potential of pyridinenuclaotide,
in primary photosynthetic reactions has becone known. L. P. Mortonson et
al. (Biochem. Biophys. Res. Co=un., 7, 1962, p. 448) gave the name of
forrodoxin (Fd) to this protein. Its role In the primary processes of
photosynthesis consists in the transfer of electrons released in tho primary
photochemical act of MDP. Proceeding from those data the authors studied
the effect of this enzyme on the Intensity of HA photooxidation. For that
purposa forredoxin was isolated from a homogenate of young spinach leaves
by means of strongly cooled acetone. The art] cle describes the actual
photooxidation and the isolation of chloroplasts. A comprehensive

COVERAGE: The authora propose a potenticmetric method for the analysis of the
HN05--N~01j--ff20 system based on chemical determination of the nitrogen oxide
content and measurement of the oxidation-reduction potential of the solution.
The values obtained in these operations are used to determine the water content
of the mixture; data tables for this purpose are included. The nitric acid con-
tent of the system is calculated by the difference method. The accuracy of the
water-content determination is within 10-05-0-1% abs- The great advantage of
this method is automatic control of the production process for concentrated
nitric acid. The authors describe their wetbod for measuring the oxidation-
reduction potential of the HNO,--N 0 --ff 0 systems, including the analysis of

intermediate and initial products of concentrated nitric acid production by
direct synthesis and the analysis of pure N204 and HH03. The tabular data
wqre compiled by the authors-in collaboration with Z. 1. Koroleva, G. L.

ABSTRACTt Melioration in the Estonian SSR comprises reclamation of
swamps and swampy mineral soils, removal of stones from ar-
able landt clearing brush from meadows and pas-tures, apply-
ing lime to sour soils and the procurement and application
of peat as fertilizer. Since 1957, seven machine-melioration
stations have been in charge of constructing and maintaining
main ditches, and carrying out drainage and. reclamation
work in cooperation with the MT stations. They are super-
vized by the Department for Melioration of the Ministry of
Agriculture.
In the period from 1950-1956 the following acreages we:re
drained: state farms - 12,100 ha, collective farms -
126,500 ha, forests - 45,600 ha. Special attention is paid

20,000 ha. Construction of new drainage systems on a large
scale was commenced in 1957, both on mineral and peat soils.
At covered drainage systems, experiments were made with
glass drainage pipes.
At the present time, equipment is provided for the fur-
ther developinG of melioration work. By January 1957, 160
excavators and numerous other machinea for melioration work
were in operation. During the period from 1951-1956, 06
melioration-engineers and 163 melioration-technicians grad-
uated from technical schools. 800 melioration-engineers
met in the summer of 1957 on the Tooma Institute of Agri-
culture and Melioration to exchange experiences.

protecting surfaces against corrosion is stressed,
Production figures for these materials in Czechoslovakia
and other European states are compared (Table 1). The
properties of various coatings ''aarketed locally and
in OEEC countries are compared. Variations in the
chemical composition of coatings (r duced manufacture
of oil and oil-containing lacauerseand increased
production of synthetic coatingstl- Table 3) is discussed.

subjected to a longitudinal compressive force and to have hingmd
supports at its ends. N.Hoff investigated the question of
stability of a compressed bar undbr conditions of creep, he,showed
that there is a critical deflection of the-bar at which the
transverse displacement approaches infinity. An evaluation of
the subject bar is madeby means of a more simple and widely used
formula;

Abstract Carbon dioxide has shown certain advantageB as compared
with other gaseous coolants which were tested in cutting
austenite steels. The author describes the results of
these tests as applied to the K-type stainless steels
and the 45 steels in relation to the temperatures
developed, the shrinkage of shavings, the coefficient of
friction, the energy needed for cutting, cutter wear,
general handling, and quality ot' finish. Five tables, 2

ABSTRACT: Description with cross-sectional drawings of a device
attached to the headstock spindle of a lathe and secured
to the lathe bed, wherein on actuation of a levert as a
result of the shearing of a hardened pin, the engagement
of the workpiece is instantaneously interrupted and the tool
suddenly arrests the workpiece in a desired position. It is
claimed that no spring-back is observed with this device.
