P# TITLE: The isotope effect in the elastic scattering of protons from nuclei PERIODICAL: Atomnaya ener'giya, v. 14, no. 1, 1963o 48-56- TEXT: In order to make an accurate study-of tlie effect of nuclear -structure-on the elastic proton scattering, separated isotopes wore investigated and measurements were made at E =5.4 and 19.6 Mev, using p the linear accelerator of the Fiziko-tekhnicheskiy institut AN US$R (Physicotechnical Institute AS UkrSSR) in Khartkov, and at B .6.0 Mev p using the cyclotron of the Instit-at fiziki AN USSR (Institute of, Physics AS U`krSSR) in Kiyev. In all cases the curves o(G)MG)c = f(G) were obtained, where,c(g) is the measured scattering cross section; a(@) c is the Coulomb scattering cross section. The protons were recorded by the nuclear photoemulsion and scintillation methods. The measured angular Card 1/4 S/089/63/014/001/006/013 The isot.ope effect in the ... B102/Bla6 distributions were compared in all cases with theoretical values calculated with the aid of an electronic computer according to the optical modal. Results: No reliable results were obtained for the calcium isotopes Ca40 and Ca48 due to the oxidation of the target. Gr52 and Cr53 were bombarded with protons of 5.4 and-6.8 lilev; the angular distribution showed two ma~cima in' all cases, the maxima being somewhr-.t higher for Cr52. The scattering observed on the event-even Cr52 with 40 magic N was similar to that on Ca for 5.4 Mev. The following Ni isotopes 58, 60, 62, and 64 were used as targets. E was 5.4 and 6.8 Mev. p At 5.4 Mev the angular distribution for the first three isotopes was alike and analogous to -that on Ca40 and Cr*52. Ni62, however showed an essentially lower scattering intensity at large angles. In this re spect 64 58 6o Ni behaves as ap odd nucleus. At 6.8 Mev Ni and'Ni behived as 52 62 Cr and Ni but ab odd nuclei. In general the agreement with theory 6o 65 ia good; a divergence appears for Ni ~at 5-4 Alev and for Col Cu Card 2/4 0 510891631014100110061013 The isotope effect In the B102/BV36 64 68 Zn and Zn at EP=5.4 Mev. The angular distributions of all these, isotopes were similar (two nearly symmetric maxima with a minimum at about 800), though the Cc and Cu nuclei were odd and the other two even. The agreement with theory in good except, for Zn 64 and largeangles. The ..results show that the angulardistribution 0(9)/o(e) c for odd and even nuclei are different A.,hen N of the odd nucleus approaches a magic number. An odd nucleon blurs the nuclear surface and increases the absorption probability for an.incident particle. Nuclei far from a magic region with even Z and nuclebn pairs outside the cl9sed shell, show such an effect-' Whether (p,p) reactions with capture take place via compound nucleus formation or whether (p,p) or.(p,.n) reactions are more pre- F dominant depends essentially on the reaction thresholds which in.turn depend on the parity. Nuclei with odd Z have lower thresholds; those with even Z but a small N-Z difference have higher thresholds. The anomalous increase of OrOVOO)c observed for some nuclei at large angles is a consequence of the elastic scatterin5 with the formati3 of. 9 63165. intermediate nuclei. Kharkovsk. un-t, 1958, Vol 98, Tr. fiz. otd. flz.-matem. fak., Vol 7, PP 159 - 161 ABSTRACT: For determining the cross sections of the reactions Be9(He3,p)B"* corresponding to B11 nucleus excitation energies of 7.3, 5.0 and 4.4 Mev, a thin beryllium target was irradiated by He3 ions accelerated by means of an electrostatic generator to an energy of 1.5 Mev. The charged particles escaping at an angle of 1200 were recorded by photo-plates with an emulsion of 200p, thickness. The quantity of He3 ions was determined by the current in the target measured by an integrator. Based on the obtained values of the differential cross sections at an angle of 1200 and the angular Card 1/2 distributions of the three groups of protons, corresponding to the ,~K 66347 SOV/81-59-19-66953 The Cross-Sections of the Reactions Be9(He3,p)B'l* at an Ehergy of 1.5 Mev levels of the nucleus with energies of 7.3, 5.0 and 4.4 Mev, the total cross sections for these three groups were calculated. The following values were obtained (in mbarn) 1.4 0.7; 0.5 0.25 and 1.0 0.5, respectively. The error in the determination of the relative values of the cross-sections does not exceed 10%. V. They d6scribe the welding conditions and heat treatment and present the results of mechanical testing of the welding Joints. The investigations to study the possibility of using frictioh welding in the manufacture of turbo-compressor runners w9re carried out by VNIIESO and TsNIDI. The 4OKh grade steel was aubjected to preliminary heat treatment I oil- .har~ienlng at 8400C, tempering at 5500C (with subsequent water cooling) - while the OKM steel was welded as delivered. The austenitic steel blanks were.produced by investment pattern casting and subjected to the following heat treatment: austenizing 1,160 - 1,1800C with water quenching, dispersion hardening at 71--,OOC with 15 hours holding and air-cooling. Specimens 16, 20 and 28 mm in diameter were welded. The chemical and mechanical properties of the steels are shown in Card 1/3 Friction welding ... 32774 S1 135/6 210001(YJ 1/00 4/00 7 Aoo4/Aioi a number of tables. The major part of the welding operation was carried out on the MCT -31 (MST-31) machine, developing an axial stress of up to 14,000 kg, while the relative rotation speed of the blanks being welded amounted to 1,000 rpm. The authors give a description of the welding conditions and point-out that an analysis of the results obtained at different welding conditions shewed that the notch toughness of the welding joint was eta~le only under the condition of using a specific peening force qqull to 21 kg/mm . In this case, the specific heating stress amounted to 6 *kg/mm . A batch of specimens friotion-welded undei~ these conditions, was subjected to mechanical tests the results of which are shown in a table. Moreover, fatigue strength tests of the welded specimens with alter- nating loads were carried-out on the BY -8 (VU-8) machine at the Leningradskiy politekhnicheskiy Institut im. Kalinina (Teningrad Polytechnic Institute im. Kalinin) . In the tensile and endurence tests all welding joints were destroyed along the E1572 steel base metal. The authors present a number of microseci:Lons, showing the microstructure of the welded specimens after etching. The analysis of the mechanical and metallographic investigations reveals that the friction welding of austenitic steel to pearlitic steel yields a dependable Joint with a sufficiently high strength, exceeding in some cases the indices of welded aui3teni- Card 2/_3 32774 S11351F_ 2/COrj /,X 7 FrifAion welding ... In this connection, the authors point to the advantages of employing friction welding, as based on experimental findings for the welding of the following combinations of austenLtic and pearlLtic steels: 1) B1696ML + 40G; 2) 91696ML + 40Kh.* 3) B1787L + 40G.- 4) E1787L + + 40Kh; 5) E1893L +-,60G, for wlifth the following conditions are established as optimal: heat--generspug pressure ph - 6 kg/m ; contact pressure pc a 21 kg/m2; I UDC: 621.791.669.15-194:621o436 -)0'6 cc - NR sAP6014156 heating time th - 12 sec-1; total upset Ea - 3-3.5 mm; relative rotational speed n - 1000 RPM. This regime assures stable, high-quality joints, as verified by tests of impact strength, tensile strength and static bending as well as by metallographic examinations. Moreover, the employment of friction welding markedly reduces the time required to prepare the rotor and the shaft for welding, as well as the welding time itself, and it also reduces power consumption and dispenses with the need for expensive austenitic electrodes. Leningr. korablestroit. in-ta, 1955, Vol 16, pp 56-59 ABSTRACT: The author presents an elementary graphical-analytical method for determining the longitudinal force under conditions of eccentric ten- sion or compression of a section for a prescribed value of the ratio M/N= e, where M is the bending moment and N the longitudinal force. It is assumed that a section of area F and having an arbitrary shape has attained a limiting-state condition, i. e., that a plast; c hinge has been formed; this condition is characterized by a normal-stress distribution diagram in the shape of two rectangles of oppos;te sign with an ordinate (rT, where 'T represents the yield point of the Card 1/2 material. it is also assumed that simple flexure obtains. The SOVII 24 -57 -4-4737 A Graphical Method of Determining the Ultimate Loading of a Steel Rod (cont.) solution found by the author for an arbitrary cross-sectionat shape is erroneous. The author determines the bending moment with the aid of the formula M-- U-TFIr, where Fl is the smaller of the two areas into which the area F is subd',ided by the neutral axis and r is the distance between the centers of gravity of the arca Fl and an area F? = F, laid out on the opposite side of the section. This formula is val;d only if the moment of the remaining area F - ZFJ, taken about the line that d'.vides the section into two equal parts, is equal to zero, a condition which occur-'s only in the case of sections with an axis of symmetry perpendicular to the plane of action of the bending moment. The calculation is based on a schematic non- hinged semicircular arch with clamped ends. The loading is assumed to be uniformly distributed over a 90-degree apex angle. The following loads were investigated: 1) the load that causes the phenomenon of creep; 2) the load that corresponds to the formation of plastic hinging; and 3) the rupture load. The ingots we're rolled in conventional order The nature of metal deformation in these sections was studied with the aid of ihe p.32 radioactive isotope. The PN isotope was introduced by separate portions and at certain intervals into the mold with the moltdn metaLl. Thus*'a series of zones were obtained during the crystallization process. The deformation of these zones during rolling should reflebt, the nature of the flow and the metal. A method was developed to study the deformation of Card 1/2 3/137/61/000/012/074/149 Studying the nature of metal deformation ...
