Abstract: It was observed that the addition of streptoly-
sin 0 to a solution containing an isolated rat
uterus caused slowing of the uterine contractions
as observed also with the addition of antihista-
mines and atropine. -- From the author's summary.

Abstract'; The authors investigated the induction of non-3peqific
resistan e to bacterial toxins, experimental shock, and model bacterial
and viral infections by simple cherdcals, such as phenol and procaine.
Activity of procaineesterase (PE) was selected as a suitable parameter.
12 doses of phenol per day doubled the PE ,ctivity; maximum was reached
after 12 doses, further increase did not show any improvement. The
resistance to infections is induced at the same time; this resistance
persists even after lh days, while the Ph activity does not. PE is the
main detoxication agent for succinylcholine. The effect of PE on the
action of succinylcholi4ro iodide is described. 6 Western, I Czech

"The Influence of an Active Immunization With Staphylococcal
Anatoxin on Experimental Infections in Rabbits"
Prague, Casopis Lekaru Ceskych, Vol CII, Do 32/33, 16 Aurust 19063,
pp o70-074-
Abstract [Authors' English summary]: Investigated was the pro-
tective effect of immunization with staphylogoccal anatoxin in
rabbits infected intravenously with the 3323 virulent s..rain.
All immunized animals survived and changes in their organs de-
veloped only after an administration of very massive doses of
microbes, but even then the changes differed from those in
control animals and resembled the changes in spontaneously re-
sistant animals. Immunized animals showed a striking presence
of interstitial lymphoplasmocytic nephritis. This affection
caused the development of a contracted kidney in bhornic exper-
iments. The findings could be applied in renal pathology. Four-
teen references, including 3 Czech.

Prague, Casopis Lekaru Ceskych, Vol CII, No 32/33, 16 Aur-,Ust
1963, I)p 910::914.
Abstract [Authors' _'English aura:iary]: Described is a case of crypto-
coccal'E ningoencephalitis in a fifty year old diabetic patient
Vreated with Amphotericin B.,,After a temporary improvement he de-
veloned an exacerbation which was fatal. Apart from a massive
affection of the meninges, particularly at the base of the brain,
arteritis was found, which in some places was necrotic; it
af-:*ected the arterial extracerebral branches and produced a pro-
ductive phlebitis of the meninges at the base of the brain. Un-
usual was the finding of red malacias in the brain, probably a
result of anoxia produced by an affection of the vessels at the
base of the brain. Discussed is the therapy and predisposing
influence of diabetes. Twenty-six references, including 6 Czech.

Title Calculation of the Liquid-Vapor Equilibrium on
the Basis of Liquid Phase Viscosity.
Orig Pub: Chem. listy., 1957, 51, No 5, 799 - 802.
Abstract: The possibility of calculating the constants
for the Van Laar equation of the third order
for binary liquid mixtures from the liquid
phase viscosity was investigated by applying
fluidity relations obtained by Eyring and oth----
ers. (Roseveare W. E., Powell R Eyring
M. J.) Appl. Phys.j 1941, 12, 66;)2~;nd vis-

Neither of the above indicated calculation meth-
ods is applicable for systems containing at
least one first-class or second-class component
as classified by Ewell (h%yell R. H. Hatrison

viscosity based on known activity coefficients
proves impossible. The formulae for the con-

Abstract: stants A and AB in the Van Laar equation, der-
ived for the remaining systems offer approxim-
ate values only, regardless of the deviation
extent of the given system from the ideal state.
Even in cases where the viscosity calculation
results are sat13factory, the reverse calcula-
tions for free enthalpy are inaccurate. In ord-
er to determine the activity coefficient on the
basis of viscosity, it is necessary to find
more accurate initial relations than those of-
fered in the publication.
