Abstract: Discusses various techniques to be used in the pro-
duction of perennial fodder plant seeds. The article emphasizes
such specific criteria as the distance between rows, hoeing, re-
seeding, selection of the terrain, preparation of the soil,
quality of the seeds, etc., as well as the importance of
modern farming procedures like irrigation and the combatting of
pests*

Title : Effect of Screen Potential on the Dark Current of Photo-
electronic Maltipliers.
Orig Pub : Magyar fiz. folyoirat, 1958, 6, No 5, 437-450
Abstract : It is shown that the level of intrinsic noise of photo-
electronic multipliers RCA 931 A and 1P21 can be reduced
considerably by a siitable choiee of voltage on the grid
that ecreens the opening window of the mUtipliers of
these types. An explanation is proposed for the mecha-
nism of the influence of the potential of this electrode
on the noise of photom!. ltipliers of these type.

TEXT: With the help of a semitransparent plate the light beam was split
into two coherent beams. The correlation arising due to nn interference of vari-
ous wave trains of both beams was measured with t he help of an electronic device
operating by the method of coincidences. It was found out that the correlation
depends on the properties of the light source, the parameters of the optical
system, and on the resolution power of the device determining the coincidence.
It was determined that there is a considerable discrepancy between the measured
and computed correlation values.

lqkperiences with Intravenous Lipid Emulsions"
Budapest,, Orvosi HatilaR., Vol 107j, No 13, Z7 Mar 66, pages 599-603
Abstract: Juthorso Hungarian summary7 The currently available preparations
of intravenous lipid emulsions were subjected to a clinical study. A total
of 354 bottles of emulsion were given to 51 patients, an average of 1#40 g
of lipid. The diagnosis and distribution according to age and sex are pre-
sented in tables. The side effects, observed in 5 per cent of the infusions,
are also discussed. The changes in the laboratory test values determined
duxing parenteral feeding are mentioned. There vmre no pathological shifts
in the values. It is stated that lipid emulsions were, in general., well
tolerated subjectively by the patients. Their use permits an adequate
supply of calories to patients in need of parenteral feeding- 4 Hungarian.,

TITLEz A potentiometric method for studying the splitting-off
of gasified HC1 during the thermal destruction of poly-
vinyl chloride
PERIODIOALt ChemicA zvesti, no. 1, 1960, 14 - 20
TEXT: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ages during the splitting-off of
gasified HC1 and hydrocarbons by the effect of heat, light and io-
nizable alkalinity. The velocity of HC1 splitting-off permits in-
directly the process of PVC destruction-to be traced. The authors
elaborated the potentiometric method? during which the concentra-
tion of HCI absorbed in water is determined by measuring the poten-
tial of the chloro-silver electrode. The advantage of this method
is in a larger selectivity which is especially advantageous for
tracing reaction kinetics. After describing how they traced the ki-
netic splitting-off of HC1 from the powdered PVC in the flow of

oxygen, air and argon by the potentiometric method, the authors
give the results in Figs. 3t 4 and 5 with the graphs of functions
m = f(T9 t = const), where m is the quantity~of the split-off HU
for the given temperature t and is expressed'in millimoles per gram
PVC and % is the time. The kinetic curves of the splitting-off HCl
in the flow of oxy, (Fig. 3) has an 3 shape. The curvature of the
,gen
curves in the starting times is caused by the thermal inertia of
the heating-regulating system. The lower the temperature, the less
is the curvature at the start. The linear part of the curves corres-
ponds to the constant velocity of the splitting-off of HC1. The de-
crease in the velocity of the splitting-off after the longer time
intervals is due to the decreasing number of non-decomposed macro-
molecules of PVC. The run of the kinetic curves of HC1 splitting-
off in the flow of air and argon (Pigs. 4 and 5) is completely ana-
logous in quality. The value of the mean active energy of the
splitting-off of HCl was calculated per Arheniov's equation

where dm/dle - relative velocity of splitting-off of HC1, E = mean
active energy, R = gas constant and T = temperature expressed in
OK. The values of the relative velocities of the splitting-off of
HC1 were determined on the basis of directions of linear parts of
the function m = fjd, t = const). The graph of the function
log (dm/dd) = F(T ) is also shown for argon. The linear run of
this function proves that the accuracy of the measurement is satis-
factory. The value of the mean active energy of the splitting-off
of HC1 in the argon flow, determined by Eq. (b) is 30-.4 kcal/(mole
HC1). This result is in sound agreement with the results obtained
during the destruction of PVC in vacuum with mass-spectroscopic me:
thods. The authors assume on the basis of kinetic measurements that
the splitting-off of HC1 starts at the end of the macromolecules.
The sudden increase of the velocity of HC1 splitting-off in oxygen

is not'only due -to-the thermal inertia of the regulation system.

The breaking of the chaino of non-decomposed macromolecules and Lhe
increase in the number of the end groups occurs in this phase of
the process probably due to the influence of oxygen and temperature.
It is possible that during these time intervals, the HC1 splitting-
off starts under the influence of oxygen not only at the ends but
also in the middle of the macromolecules. The basic difference bet-
ween the values of the relative velocity proves that the medium, in
which the destruction of PVC occurmd, basically affects the process
of HC1 splitting-off. Further it is clear that HC1 in the oxygen
medium is splitting-off from the PVC macromolecules which in their
properties differ from the macromolecules, from which the HCl is
splitting-off in the argon atmosphere. There are 6 figures and 5

ABSTRAC'g: The vinyl thioacetate monomer was obtained by pyrolysis of 2-acetoxyevfq~
thioacetate in a current of C02 at a temperature of 490C. Its polymrization
was conducted in the presence of dinitri-le of isobutyric acid in an atmosphere of
nitrogen. The kinetic measurements were carried out, by the dilatometric technique.1
and the molecular weights were determined by cx7oscopy. The copolymerization with
N-vinylsuccinimide,, N-vinylphthalimide, and N-vinylcarbazone was conducted in
sealed aVaes at 60C* It was found that the polymerization rate of vinyl thioao-

etate was proportional to the 0.75 pm;,-.r of the initiator concentration and that
the brutto activation energy was 25jj',,' kcal/mole. Since the median polymerization
coefficient was not significantly affected by the concentration of the initiatorp
it was concluded that the chain transfer constant had to be high. An enhancing
effect on thEr reactivity of the corresponding monomer was produced by replacing
oxygen with sulfur. All of the copolymers wore soluble in benzene and contained
nitrogen. By reacting hydrazine hydrate with the vinyl thioacetate-vinyl
succinimide and vinyl thioacetat~-vinylphthalimide cqpolym~rs,,.the authors
obtained polymers containing free SH and NH2 groups which were rapidly oxidized
by air. Orie. art. has: 7 charts, 2 tables, and 3 formulas.
