ABSTRACT: The authors, continuing earlier work of one of them (Zh. ksper. i teor.
fiz., 35, 1076, 1958), have investigated the production oJ & matter by
high energy protons and pions in order to acquire data for estimating the secondary
background due to the surrounding material in rocket an d satellite measurements of
primary cosmic radiation. The measurements were per2ormed at Aragats at an al-
titude of 3200 m above sea level. The investigated protons and pions were produced
in lead by cosmic ray neutrons; their momento were determined with the aid of a
magnetic fields and their ionizing powers were measured with a seqw.)nce of five gas-

filled proportional counters. After passing through the magnetic field and the
proportional counterol the secondary particle entered an "interaction hodoscope,
consisting of a layer of polystyrene, three thin (,ul5 F/cm2) layers of lead, and
four thick, (A3 g/cm2) layers of copper, with counter trays between them. The
data are presented graphically as momentum vL%rsus ionizing power plots for the par-
ticles that exhibited different specific typs of behavior in the interaction hodo-
scope* From the data presented it to concluled that J5% of the events recorded by
a detector surrounded by M-50 g/cm2 of heavy metal will be shower events, that the
probability of producing a penetrating shower increases with increasing momentum of
the initiating particle, that a pion with momentum between 0.1 and 0.7 Bev/c Is
from two to four times more likely to produce a shower than is a proton of the same
momentum, and that it will be ddfficult to Identify primary cosmic ray electrons or
Y-rays by observing the showers they produce unless the aecondary.partioles are

TEXT: Olijnychenko (Nuovo Cimento, 21, 389,

case of a static field with an arbitrary metric

there are no solutions with non-zero distribution of matter.
It is now shown that this paradox could.be eliminated by the

Next, it is shown that a static field cannot be axially symmetric.
However, a uniformly rotating body can have an axially symmetric
field. The metric of an axially symmetric distribution of matter
cannot be diagonal. The final section of this paper is concerned.
with a variational derivation of Tik , which leads to well-known
expressions but might be of methodological interest. The method
is based on the variation of the action integral

also zero, which is inadmissible. One should assume that

These equations were integrated numerically bythe Runge-Kutta method at the
Vy*chislitollny*y Tsentr, AN ArmSSR (Computer CenterAcademV of SciencespArme-
nian SSR) rrom initial conditions u(0) = 0 and P= P(O). Results were obtained
for the radii, mass, hyperon nuclei, and shells of various stars. These results
..show the greater part of the mass to be concentrated in the hyperon nuclei of the
stars. Graphical representations were obtained for the overall mas&and radius
~.of the star as a function of density at the center of the star~for real and for
ideal gases. The masa-veraus-density curve shows an oacillatory-chiWactere

TRAIMATION; A study has been made of the equation of state of matter at very
great densities and low temperatures. In the development of earlier
Investigations (see RZhAstr, 1960. No. 10. 10003) the authors considered the
possibility of the formation of nuclei in some layer of equilibrium superdense
configuration. Until now they have considered purely baryon configurations,
that is configurations consisting of a gas of elementary particles. In the
investigated superdense star there is a change of phases with movement from

the center to the surface; these phases correspond to the densities: above m3
nuclear. nuclear and below nuclear. It 15 shown that when fl--, 3-3*10, g/c
the matter for the most part consists of baryons. The concentration of
Leptons is several orders of magnitude less than the concentration of each of
the types of baryons. At greater densities the concentrations of all types of
baryons are of the same order of magnitude. In the region 6-7-1013
