The feed cylinder of t el chamber is made from an ordinary 5-ml glass syringe. The cylinder of the syringe (seei Fig, 1 ) is cut off to 30-40 mm and the plunger to 10-15 mm- A silver point elec- I trode is used for taking a monopolar surface electrocorticogram, 'The indifferent electrode is placed on the car of the animal, Microolectrodes made of tungsten wire kith a diameter of 20,a were'usod to reall extracellular peak potentials. The electrooptic coefficients were determined under statilc conditions I in mechanically free crystals, and the piezooptic coefficient, which determines the secondary electrooptic effect, was measured in isolated samples without electrodes, using a procedure described by one of the authors earlier (Vasilevskaya, ~~Cristallo- grafiya v. 10, 12', 1965). All the measurements were made in a thermosta-, at a con- stant wavelength 5350 A. The linear and quadratic electro-optical effects were de- termined separately by birefringence measurements. The linear coefficient 'Was found to be 1.8 x 10-7 esu, and the quadratic one, which was found to depend on the polari- zation (owing to the fact that the nonlinear terms of higher order are still quite large), was found to be 4 x 10-3-0 esu at a polarization of 0.02 ~Xouvcm2. The Card- 1/2 ~-;,'-ACC NRz AP6037018 f.-,~quadratic coefficient increases with teiperatu-.-e ;ore rapidly than the linear one. The piezooptic coefficient was found to be practically independent of the tempera:- ture. When the piezooptic effect is taken into account, the value of 'he electro- optic coefficient decreases from -1.8 x 10-' to -1.4 x 10-' esu. The a'uthars thank L. N. Rashkovich and V. A. Koptsik for supplying the crystals, I. A. Slepkov and - M. P. Kalitina for help with the experiments, and I. S. Rez and V. E. Perfilova for a discussion of the results.
