ABSTRACT: The authors investigated the Raman spectra of
phenylcyclobutanejand of the following aryloyclobutanes:
M-tolyicyclobutand, ii-tolylcyclobutane, o-anisyleyclobutane,
n-anisylcyclobutane; for the sake of comparison the Raman
spectra of phenylcyclopropane and n-tolylcyclopropane were
also obtained. The apparatus, the experimental technique
and the methods of calculation were the same as in earlier
work (Ref 6). The results are given in Tables 2-4, and the
properties (such as the melting point, refractive Index,
etc) of the four aryleyclobutanes and of phenylcyclobutane
are listed in Table 1. The Raman spectra of all four

TEXT: In their investigation (Refs. 1-4) on the catalytic splitting of
alkyl- and aryl tetrahydrODYridazines, the authors could obtain only
aryl cyclobutanes, but no alkyl cyclobutanes (Ref. 4). In the present
work, the catalytic splitting of alkyl aryl tetrahydropyridazines has
been attempted for the purpose of synthesizing alkyl aryl cyclobutanes.
The authors proceeded from 5-methyl- and 6-methyl-3-phenyl tetrahydro-
pyridazines which were obtained by hydrolyzing the adducts of the cor-
responding dienes with azodicarboxylic acid ester. These initial products
proved to be unstable compounds, and were identified from their addition
products to phenyl isothiocyanate ~The presence of an NH group in the
initial products was also proved KRef. 3). The catalytic splitting of the

two initial 2yridazines was carried out in the same way as that of aryl
tetrahydropyridazines described in Refs. 1-3. Thus, a gas composed of
nitrogen and propylene evolved under the formation of a mixture of the
corresponding methyl-phenyl cyclobutane and styrene. Consequently, the
decomposition of alkyl aryl tetrahydropyridazines is similar to that of
aryl- A2-tetrahydropyridazines: While nitrogen is produced, the biradical
is formed as an intermediate which yields cyclobutane and two ethylene
hydrocarbons. The molar ratio between the yield of methyl-phenyl cyclo-
butane and styrene proved to depend on the position of the methyl group
in the tetrahydropyridazine ring. Vacuum distillation (cf. experimental
part) of the resulting cyclobutane showed that 1-methyl-2-phenyl cyclo-
butane consisted of a mixture of cis- and trans-isotaers (1;1), whereas
1-methyl-3-phenyl cyclobutane contained 80% of the trans-form. Raman
spectra showed the absence of olefins in the separated hydrocarbons
(Ref. 5). The characteristic frequencies 912-950 cm'- 1 confirmed the pre-
sence of a four-membered ring. There are 1 table and 12 references: 9

ABSTRACT: Shortly the authors wrote about the possibility of a synthesis
as mentioned in the title by means of the decomposition of
tetra-hydro-pyridazine (Ref 1). In the present paper they
investigate this reaction by means of some examples. The last
mentioned initial substances are 6-membered analogs of
py,razoli.nes. In the case of their heating in the presence of
caustic potash and platinum they decompose under the separation
of nitrogen and a formation of cyclobutane hydrocarbons. It
showed that the biradicals 11:1 forming as intermediates not
only do not cyclize but even i,.leaye under the formation of
ethylene hydrocarbons. The quantitative ratio between the
Card 1/3 aryl-cyclobutans formed and the corresponding styrene can be

A New Method of the Prodaction of Cyclobutane Hydrocarbons
classified according to the ratio between the quantity of nitro-
gen and that.of ethjllene separated in the decomposition of the
initial monoaryl-tetra-hydro-pyridazine (IIa in IIb). Thus the
authors were the first to succeed in extending the range of
application of the classical Kizhner reaction which hitherto
has been regarded only of use in the synthesis of cyclopropane
hydrocarbons. This way the authors synthetized the hitherto
not described p-tolyl cyclabutane and 1,2-aiphenyl cyclobutane.
In an earlier paper (Ref 3) the authors proved that in phenyl
cyclopropane there exists a conjugation between the benzene
nucleus and the 3-membered cycle, The comparison of the in-
tensities of some of the most intensive frequencies (character-
istic of the benzene ring) in the spectra of the combination
dispersion of phenyl cyclobutane with the intensities of
corresponding frequencies in the spectra of the propenyl benzene;
phenyl cyclopropane on the one hcLnd and alkyl benzenes on the
other hand proved that the monosubstituted aromatic hydrocarbons
are arranged in a series as follows: propenyl benzene-N phenyl
cyclopropane> phenyl cyclobutane> isopropyl benzene (Table 1).

A New Method of the FrodUction of Cyclobutane Hydrocarbons
have far higher intensities than in the spectrum of p-methyl-
ethyl benzene. This fact proves the existing conjugation
between the benzene ring and the 4-membered nucleus.

Title: On the Thermionic Emission of Silicate and Alumo-Silicate Ion Ex-
changers
Original
Periodical: Vestn. Moak. un-ta., 1955, No 8, 3-15
Abstract: The authors remark that to obtain ions for the analysis of specimens
in the solid phase in mass spectrometers one usually employs e:Lther
the ionization surfaces, or else thermionic emission from heated
salts. This work is devoted to experimental Investigation of ion
emission of certain substances for the purpose of finding a suitable
emitter of ions for mass spectrometers. The objects sUdied were
combination products of ions of alkali metals with al-amo-silicates
of various compositions. According to chemical and x-ray diffraction
data., the alkali ions do not enter into the composition of the

Abstractt crystal lattice, and are therefore usually evaporated relatively
easily when heated. In addition, the high porosity of the speci-
mena insures sufficient emission stability with time, which in prac-
tice is also a valuable property of the ion exchangers. An experi-
mental study was made of the dependence of the magnitude and of the
stability of the ion emission on the chemical composition and on the
heat treatment used in the manufacture of the sources. It was ob-
served, that the alumo-silicate A1203-4SiO2 heated at 6000 for 50
hours, has the best properties. Such a source gives a lithium ion
current of 2 x 10-9 amp at 7500. The authors note the analogy be-
tween the magnitude of the ion emission of alumo-silicate ion ex-
changers of various compositions and their catalytic properties in
a whole series of chemical reactions. Bibliography, 51 titles-

dependent on the milling time. The presence of additivity was confixmed in the
physical-mechanical properties (tensile strength) of plastics rontaining mixtures
of plasticizers greatly differing in their chemical nature (TNM + DBF + T
" TNM CP).
TUM can be considered an intramolecular plasticizer since its relatively high cm- i
,patibility with PVC., its lowering of the second order transition temperature of the'
isecond order transition temperature of the plastic.. and its increase in the rela- 'I
Itive elongation of the PVC containing larger amounts of TNM are difficult to
explain by intexmolecular plasticization. Based on investigations,, the use of TNK,,l
individually or in mixtures with frost resistant plasticizer, is proposed for the
preparation of materi-,la with increased mechanical strength and high dielectric
,properties. Orig. art. has: 1 table and 4 figures.

ABSTRACT; The effect of the following compounds on the thermal stability and thermal,
degradation Of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was studied: ditolyl-nothane (DTIi), toly1naph-
thylnethane ditolyl ketone (DTK), toluene-fozmaldehyde resin (TF), nhenol,
benzylphenol (B?), toluene-nhenol-formaldehydo resinOTPF), benzy1phenol elycidy!
ester (BPE),_E!_FF-3i5ind ED-OS-epoxy resinsj5'and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Me 'hermal
stability of PVC was found to be affected both by the chemical structure of the plas-
ticizers and the mere dilution of the polymer by the plasticizer, irrespective of its
chemical nature. The rate of HC1 evolution is markedly decreased by compounds con-
taining epoxy groups and by TF resin. Thermal degradation is strongly accelerated by
