Investigation of Contact Potential Differences Between Sn and
Sn-Te Alloys and the ElectrocapillaTy Phenomena on Sn-Te
Alloys -~ I
PERIODICALs Zhurnal fizicheskoy khimii, 1960, Vol. 34, No. 6,
pp. 1345-1350
TEXT: On account of his investigations of the electrocapillary phenomena
on thallium amalgams (Ref. 1), A. N. Frumkin esta'blished that the dif-
ference in the potentials between the metals in the point of zero charges
is similar to the differences in the contact potentials between the same
metals in a vacuum. Experimental tests of this assumption were carried
out several times as by S. V. Karpachev and A. G. Stromberg (Ref. 2),
0. Chaltykian and M. Proskurnin (Ref. 3), and V. A. Smirnov and L. I.
Antropov (Ref- 4); few reliable results were, however, obtained. In this
case the above examinations were carried out for this reason, as it was

to be assumed that tellurium would be surface-active with respect to ta-iil,
and thus a large difference in contact potential between Sn and Sn-Te
alloys can be detected at low tellurium concentrations. The measurements
were carried out at 4500C and ,-jo-5 torr in an apparatus (Fig. 1)
similar to the one in Ref. 3, and a special ampule 'Fig. 2) was used.
The vacuum contained ajIN-46im (VN-461m) preliminar.-I vacuum pumO an

OQI
50-3 (VI-3) ionization-vacuum gauge . in urified bj zone melting from
the Sverdlov'skiy reaktivnyy zavod (Sverdlovsk Reagent Works) was used.
The potential differences were determined by the method of the displace-
ment of the diode characteristics. The diagrams obtained (Figs, 3, 4)
of the differences in the contact potentials between Sn and Sn-Te alloys
with 0.02 and 0.15 wt~ Te show that the difference Ls 0.07 v or 0.15 v
The electrocapillary curves (Fig,. 5) for Sn and Sn-'re alloys of the
above concentration show that according to expectations, Te is surface.
active with reference to Sn. The potentials of the zero charge are thus
shifted to positive values, and the size of the shift is similar to the
difference in the contact potentials between Sn and the above Sn-Te alloys

TITLE: Standard radioactive thickness gage for measuring the thickness of coatings and sheet
materials
PERIODICAL: Referativnyy zhurnal, otdeI'nyy vypusk. Ismeritat'naya tekhnika, no. 7, 1962, 11, abstract
32.7.70. Collection "Radioakt. izotopy i yadern. izluchenyya v nar. kh.-ve SSSR",

TEXT: The economic effectiveness of standard radioactive thickness gages for the routine production control
of various sheet mateirials is stressed, It is shown that standardization of radioactive measuring instru-
ments, apart from conventional advantages (improved mass production, reduced prime cost, interchange-
ability, etc.) permits the use of standard radioactive sources. The paper presents data on the following radio-
active measuring instruments produced at the Tallin pilot plant for control and measuring instruments:
I) Noncontact weighing gage of the 131,113-1 (BIV-1) type for continuously measuring the weight of a coating
applied to a fabric. The gage works on the compensation principle and is provided with two ionization cham-
bers. The weight-measuring range for surface coatings varies from 200 to goo g/M2, and the accuracy is 2%.
The gages work with a T1204 source; 2) The noncontact gamma-thickness gage of the UTY495 (ITU495)

type (and of its variant the 14TIU-496 (ITSh496) type) is used for the continuous measurement of thickness
of a moving steel strip during the rolling operation. The measuring range varies from 0.05 to I mm, the
accuracy is 1.5 %. The device works on the compensation principle. The efectrometric stage is operated
by d.c. ftequency-modulated circuitry; 3) The beta-thickness gage of the GTFI-2 (BTP-2) type is designed
for the sampling control of surface coatings. The device permits the measurement of thickness of surface
coatings on materials the atomic number of which markedly differs from the atomic number of the coated
support. Maximum value of measured thickness is 65 Mg/M2; 4) Universal radioactive thickness gage of
the YPHT-I (URIT-1) type for sheet materials and coatings. The device works on the differential principle
with automatic readjustment, for comparing the materials to be measured with a standard thickness. Des-
cription of the working principle is given and it is shown that by proper choice of the ionization chambcrs
and radioactive sources it is possible to obtain a wide range of thickness measurements, There are 2 figures.
