ABSTRACT: A study of the sanitary-hygienic working conditions in the olectric-
furnace shop of an aluminum plant showed that the principal harmful
phenomenon in the smelting of Si and Fe-Si are the evolutions of an
aerosol of condensed SiO2 from the electric furnaces. The concen-
tration of dust (containing 80.5-86.5% SiO?
3 ') in the air of the %%orking
space was 40-45 mg/m , the concentration of SiOZ on the avE rage
was 11.0 mg/m3. CO (0.112 mg/1) and S02 ( - 0.02 mg/1) were
found in addition to the dust. The intensive heat radiation and the
high temperature of the air ( < 551C) in the summer time are unfav-

!ABSTRACT: The influence of annealing in atmospheres of 11C1, C02
!nitrogen, and air on the absorption and dielectric losses of HaC1
crystals was studied. The reasons for the decrease or disappearance
of the absorption band near 1900 X In unannealed hydrolized crystals
.were also determined* The NaCl crystals were prepared from the initial
purified material by pulling from the melt in air, Platelets approxi-

103.CpS, in the 20-40 '0C range. One relaxation maximum (at about
1280C) was found for "pure" NaCl crystals. The following conclusions
were reachedt 1) Annealing In an HC1 atmosphere causes the disappear-
once of "free" ON' ions, as well as the destruction of forms with an
iactivation energy near 0.91 ev and the simihtaneoud formation of forms
1with a lower activation energy near 0.83 ev.,--- The latter forms are
1revealed b.y measurement of the dielectric losses. 2) Annealing of
NaCl crystals In' C02 or In air leads to h decrease In tle concentra-
tion*of "free" OH- ions* However, the dielectric loose remain un-
changed. It can.thus be deduced that."fiee" OR- ions do not partici-.
pate in fhe forms which cause the -formation of relaxation maxims.
3) The fact that annealing In a nitrogen atmosphere does not change
either the ~absorption or the die.lectric losses. confirms the assumption
that a reactLon between atmospheric COI and the "free" OR groups-

in the first stage of the infection in the cells.
The DNA accumulated inside the virus colonies in
proportion to the development of the cellular in-
fections. The authors consider that this process
is conditioned, on the one hand, by an impairment
of the normal cellular metabolism (stimulation of
DNA, synthesis), and on the other is a result of
the absorption of chromatin substances by the
virus in the process of formation of impurities.
An analogy is cited between the mechcnism of the
bacteriophage and the process of virus reproduction
during experimental herpes. -- According to the

ABSTRACTS The work of R. J. Elliott (Phys. Rev. 108p, 1384y 1557) on exoiton effects
at the direct absorption edge is extended to include other var. Hove singularities and
deviations from the effective mass approximation. The am rule which replaces the
f-sum rule in this case-is derived. The Kostler-Slater and Cculomb interactiens are
treated as limiting cases. Due to the electron-hole interactionp the 1-b and ~k branch
points of C2 are enhanced and sharpened, while the Mq and M3 tranch points are weake
and smoothed out. Only the Mo points generate (quast-) discrete levels; no evidence
for these is found near the MI points. For a very prelate MI singularity, certain
branch points appear asyMtotically below the critical energy. Authors express their

out of 55 cases of ocular tb treated by isoniazid 25 patients were improved, a
slight improvement was re,:orded In 13 patients while 13 remained unchanged and
4 became worse. Hest results -were obtained in tb c1horoiditis (15 improvements
out of 28 cases). In tb periphlebitis a less favourable restil: -was recorded and the
author supposes that during haemorrhages deterioration might even be caused by
active treatment. In inflammatory conditions of the anterior segment of the eve I
the results are not satisfactory enough, owing perhaps to Vie difficulties in tl~e di-
aganosis of eye tb. Neither acute tuberculous disserninatior. nor ocular manifesta.
tions of tuberculous allergy can be favourably changed by tioniazid. None the less
isoniazid Is a very valuable contribution to the treatment of eye tuberculosis# es-
pecially in combination with streptomycin. The effectiveness o(the treatment mani-
