Other specific properties of 13IFeO3 in addi- tion to the large internal fields and large spontaneous polarization$ were a high Curie temperature (850C), and the absence nf nonlinear properties at room tempera- ture. An analysis of all the published data and the present resulto shown that in spite of the fact that the spontaneous electric polarization of BiFeO3 is very high, so that no dielectric IVsteresls loops could be obtained, this substance is ferroclectric. The clearly defined anomalies in the spectra are determined, corresponding to the dielectric and magnetic transitions in solid solutions in conformity with tetragonal and rhombo- hedral modifications. The data on changes in the EPR spectra are analyz*ed in relation to the properties of solid solutions under study. The structural coefficients used in calcu- lating the gradients were taken from experimental data in the literature. Curves are given showing the difference in lattice parameters (c-a) as a function of tem- perature. The affect which temperature has on spontaneous polarization, the intra- :crystalline field and the gradients of the field is analyzed for the same modifl- _Z_ Card 1/2 B, 31171-66 ACC NR: AP6006823 11~ation of barium titan'ate. The gradients are studied as a function of charge and lpolarizability of A and B cations in AB03 crystals of the BaT103 type. The pro- 'posed method gives results which agree satisfactorily with the experimental data !in the literature. The ion model is found to be highly effective for evaluating ;electric field intensities and gradients in ferroelectrics which are basically met- [al oxides. The results of this paper may be useful for interpreting experimental data on the Mdssbauer effect and -nuclear quadrupole resonance in isomorphic barium titanate compounds as well as in solid solutions with a perovskite structure. The techniques, used for the crystal-structure measurements at high tem-paraturer and for the phase, "r, suremnts, were described by the authors earlier (M v. 6, 2)9Z,3~)& Wid. iV--.1ab,---no-e--91 1112, 1961). The dielectric measurements were made by a standard bridge method, and the magnetic measurements by the FaradAy method. The tests showed that several solid solutions are Tormed in the FbFe2/3W1/303--Fb2Yb14bOG system, some of which combine ferroelectric or arrtiferroelect~ric ropertles with ferrimagnetic ones over a relatively wide range of concentrations and temperatures. The material used has properties similar to that of the earlier in- I vestigation, and the addition of manganese made the samples practic- ally single-phase and closer to equilibrium. The test procedure is briefly described. The results indicate that the jump in the value of the Mossbauer effect in solid solutions based on BiFeO is the re., 3 sult of magnetid hyperfine splitting (but is not caused by change in the probability of the effect), and is related to an antiferromag- netic phase transition. This conclusion is supported by magnetic .,-I'measurement results. Orig. art. has:-3 figures. It is seen that in the region of the morphotropio phase transition the Curie point is very high (on the order of 7000, and it therefore seems suitable (in order to obtain high-temperature piezoelectric material) to introduce other material into the system to decrease the conductivity and to improve the conditiona of polarization. Experifrental specimens wer'a produced from lithium carbonate and tantalum pentoxide. They were ptirified by two repented hentings (60 min ench), one atnooC and one at 1350C. X-rpy analysis and subsequent calculations proved that the lattice paremeters of lithium tantalAte were: on hexagonal axes -- a A; on 0 H - 5.153 1 and cH = 13.7?5 rhombohedral axes -- a.Rh = 5.4?0 A and d\Rh - 560121. Dielectric permeabilities Card 1/2 ACCESSUN 11R: AP4011779 were measured with a bridge LTP-3DO at the frequency of 250 kilohertz. The authors by means of nome examples suggent a convenient method for the cleavage of the esters of the benzofurfurane- and indole-o-cmboxylic acids by their heating with equimol,?cular quantities of sulfuric or phosphoric acid in glacial acetic acid solution. The reaction takes place according to the mentioned scheme. Thus the authors by the oction of vulfuric acid on the corresponding esters obtained the furfuranes (1), (II), (III) and the indole (IV), vnd by the action of phos- phoric acid the indoles (V) and (VI). The 2-phenyl-3-carboxy- 6,7-dichlorobenzofurfurane-5-oxyacetic acid was also oub- jected to the cleavage of sulfuric acil, with the compound (VII) having been obtained.
