Title: Application of a Driven Sweop In the Recording of Seismic
Vibrations
Original
Periodicals Izv. AN SSSH, Ser. Geefiz., 1956, No 5, 525-533
Abstract: Description of a method and apparatus for a multi-channel photo-
graphic recording of seismic vibrations, the-time of arrival of
which is unknown beforehand, with the speed of the sweep being
capable of being raised to 50 MM/sec. The method is based on
using a driven sweep in the registers, automatically switched in
at the instant that the first pulse of aNAWation arrives at the
seismogr*_

TITLE: Carrying capacity of circular and ring-shaped plate~3 re-
inforced by ring-shaped ribs

TEXT: The author considers the problem of ultimate equilibrium of
plates as above, in case of uniform load distribution. If the mate-
rial of the plate has certa~:_n properties, ultimate equilibrium "vill
appear at a certain value of load q = 90. The Tresca-Saint VenanT.
condition of plasticity is used. The state of a rib is plastic ahen
the ultimate value of the moment twisting the rib is less or equal
to the ultimate moment of the plate 1-1. - elastic or elasto-plastic

if this value exceeds Ms. In the latter case the carryinng capaci~,y
of the plate is exhausted before the rib reaches the ultima-Le --a
The author gives an estimation of ultimate reactive moments due t-,
the ribs in conditions of plasticity, considering the ribs as cy-
lindrical shells. To estimate the carrying capacity of the plate it
is supposed that both the plate and ribs are in the state of plastil",
city and the reactive moments at the internal and external edge
(Mi and M2) , due to the ribs, are both smaller than DI .. The radial
bending moment M B becomes equal to 0 for some value po of the ra-
dius. A transcendental equation is obtained for po which is stated
to be difficult to solve in tha general case. Special cases of pro,
blems occurring in practice ar,a considered: 1),M 2 ~ M61 Ml.j~ Ms; 2)

graphs of the ratio of po to 1-Aie exterrial radius of "he plate are
given for all cases. In order ';o denide whether the presence of

ribs is appropriate, the author calculates the efficiency from the
point of view of the quantity of material, giving a graph of the
efficiency factor. It is stated that the reaults do not decide the
problem of the most efficient position of the rib. There are 16
figures, 4 tables and 5 Soviet-bloc references.

as well as for engineers of oher specialties working on stress analysis.
It may be used as a text by s-.i:.dents in the field.
COVERAGE: This book contains or. LFInal stress analysis calculations made on
machinery elements and parts. Analyses are made of coiled springs with
an arbitrary helix angle, bending of turbine discs, strain state of
flat pistons, and a circular cylinder. A number of original applications
of general methods of the theory of elasticity to the study of lateral
bending and torsion of rods ij given. In the cal.culations on stability,
nev methods of determining critical forces for compressed rods and a~hlyzing
the stability of circular and ring-shaped plates are applied. Calculations
for dynamic loadings are represented by a study of the analysis of varia-
tions of the indicators of devices during vibration. References accompany
individual articles.

ABSTRACT: An examination of the bending of thin circular plates with con-
current action of a transverse axisyntmetric load and radial
forces uniformly distributed along the circumference. The solu-
tion is obtained as a sDecial limit case of the analogou5 problem
relative to an annular plate. The equations are set tip in a iorm
characteristic of the method of initial parameters. The influence
functions, consisting of combinations of cylindrical functions,
are tabulated, A numerical example is examined.

ABSTRAM The author points out the specific peculiarities of teaching
physics at the working yputh schools and states that the present
program for the 6th and 7th classes is in many respects primitive
for adult students and does not satisfy the demands of polytech-
nical training.
He therefore suggests that for the 6th and 7th classes, cer-
tain subjects be eliminated and replaced by others. It is inad-
missible that graduates of the 7th class do not know how to charge
an accumulator and are not acquainted with an automobile starter,
generator, etc. This proves that a special curriculum should be
drawn up for the working youth schools, and a special textbook
issued for the 6th# thrix 10th classes.
The author points out that polytechnical training is just as
necessary in these schools as it is in the mass schools. He re-

TEXT: The problem is considered of the load carrying capa-
city of circular and annular plates reinforced with annular
ribs along the edge and under uniformly distributed transverse
load. The final solutions given are based on the general theory
of critical equilibrium of thin plates. Formulas, graphs and
tables are given for a number of particular cases. Application
of the solutions obtained is shown in the example of calculating
the circular flat bottom of the apparatus and in determining
the effectiveness of reinforcing the inner contour of an annular
plate. Z-Abstracter's note: Complete translation.-7
