Hoptoaampa e~hippiata differs from the related species both morphologically (it'is'darker and smaller) and biologically. Although Hoptocampa ephippiata has beon round only in the Irkutsk rayon, it is apparently as widely distributed as the Siberian apple tree, ~&e.' from the southern part of Eastern Siberia to the Par East. They determined the in- fluenoe of the MAE concentration upon the intensity of cell division and the storage of dry substance. The algae were cultured in a conic 1 1 flask in. 500 ml culture medium of the following oompositiont (in mg/l)urea 257, K2HPO4 200g MgSO 4* 7H2 0 1009 caso4lot CO(No 3)2 -6H20 0.02t CuB04*5H2o 0.01, Card 1/8 21982 S/020161/137/005/026/026 Effect of maleic acid B1031B208 znSO 4# 7H20 0,041 MnSO 4*7H20 1.09 NaBO31-4, (NH 4)2MO7 024 0,59 ethylene diamine tetraaoetic acid (IMTA:) 10.0 and reSO 4 2,6. The flasks were illuminated from the botton with AC-30 (DB-30) luminescent lamps for 12 hr per 24 hr. The temporature of the culture medium was 25 - 270CP air (5% C02-content) was bubbled through it. The experiment lasted from October 21 to November 59 '1959. Table I shove the results on Chlorella pyrenoidoos.. The largest increase of cell numbe F and dry 1substance was found to take place at MAH concentration3 of 10- and 10- mg1l. The stimulating concentration 10 -2 mg1l also intensifies the photosynthesis and the respiration of thi algae. Pigs I illustrates this effect per one flask and per one billion cells. The analogous stimulating action of MAE on the other two algae species may be seen from Table 3. The authors found thEA the effect of MAE on the afore-mentioned algae is somehow dif- ferent from, that of the th;promoting substances of the auxin group (HYK (IME) and HMK (IMKr)oow T e latter also increased the number of cells, but redueed the dry substance of the algae (Table 2). The authors refute the hypothesis prevailing in publications or. the antiauxinio effect of Card 21982 ~/026/61/137/005/6i6/026~ Effect of maleic acid ... B103/B208 MAE (Refs* 5 and 6). They think it necessary to look for another expla- nation of the MAE-effect on growth processes on the basis of the available data (R13fs, 4 and 7)o They concluded from their resultst 1) Intensity of cell division and storagre of biomass by the cells are affected by different mochanismal 2) MAE stimulates these two mechanisms in optimum concentrations, while the oubstances of the auxine group accelerate the call division, but in4ibit a further storage of biomass.
