SOV/20-124-2-63/71 TITLEs The Effect of Environmental Conditions Upon the Intensity of Respiration in Cuttings Treated With Heteroauxin (Vliyaniye usloviy aredy na intensivnoat' dykhaniya cherenkov, obrabotannykh geteroaukainom) PERIODICALs Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1959, Vol 124, Ur 2, PP 466 - 46a (=R) ABSTRACTt The growth stimulants have a particularly strong activating effect upon the physiological processes in the lower internodes of the treated cuttings (Refs 2, 3). According to some publications the morphology of the cuttings is changed by the conditions of taking roots (Ref 4)- In 1955-1957 the authors investigated the effect of the following factors upon the cuttings: temperature and light, as mentioned in the title. The experiment was carried out with 12 day old bean seedlings under glass house conditions. The cut off cuttings were put into a 0.01 % solution of heteroauxin potassium salt at 16-170 during 6 hours. Then a part of the cuttings was implanted Card 1/3 at 12-14 O.another part at 18-200 for the purpose of rooting. The Effect of Environmental Conditions Upon the SOV/20-124-2-63/71 Intensity of Respiration in Cuttings Treated With Heteroauxin Each group was exposed to different light conditionat 5000 lk and 20,000 lk. Skazkin and others determined the respiration intensity according to Boysen-Jensen (Boyeen-Yensen,Reference 4) at 7 stages (Ref 1): 1. Immediately after the cutting off of the cuttings. 2. Immediately after treatment. 3. One day after treatment- 4. Three days after treatment- 5- Five days after treatment. 6. Seven days after treatment, and 7. 12 days after treatment. Respiration intensity was separately investigated in the upper and lower parts of the cuttings as well as in the leaves. Tables I - 4 show the results. They prove that the increase of respiration intensity under the action of heteroauxin with an unchanged temperature background (fon) is due to a*more intensive illumination with the same illumination respiration becomes more intensive in the case of higher temperature. The same conditions are responsible for the highest stimulation of root formation by heteroauxin. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is apparently the increase of respiration intensity in the lower parts of the stem. Thus a considerably higher quantity of energy is released. This is Card 2/3 the reason for the intensivation of the synthetic processes Vie Effect of Environmental Conditions Upon the SOV/20-124-2-63/71 Intensity of Respiration in Cuttings Treated With Heteroauxin which cause an intensive root formation of the cuttings treated with the stimulant. - There are 4 tables and 5 references, 3 of which are Soviet. The method is based on the experimental data obtained on Y -active aerosols subjected to centrifugal sedimentation. The aerosol was contained in a test tube; the 1~ -detector ims situated at the bottom of the test tube. A typi- cal 9 -sedimentation curve Is shown In FJZ. I on the Enclosure. From the ex- perimental data an activity distribution function ~ (r), which gives the fractioni of activity, associated with particles of radlu3 rV was derived. The polyene side chain was built up from acetals and vin 1 ethe s by the known con- densation reaction (Refs- 3, 7, 8, 9, and 10 . Zinc chloride in ethyl- or butyl acetate was found to be the beat catalyst. It was shown that the acetals of 4-methyl A3-teirahydrobenzaldehyde can undergo condensation with vinyl ethers, yielding primary condensation products in 12.6 to 19;5% yield. Synthesis of Polyenoic Acids and Esters in the 3 A -Cyclohexene Series PERIODICAL: Zhurnal obshchey khimii, 1960, Vol. 30, No- 11, PP. 3739-3743 TEXT3 To supplement their previous paper (Ref. 1), the authors investi- gated the.condensition with malonic acid of the polyenals synthesized by them. By this reaction, they obtained the hitherto unknown acids of the b~-cyolohexene series and esters of these compounds. On the basis of numerous published data it was to be expected that several of thew com- pounds possessed biological activity. Synthesis of Polyenoic Acids BOOI/BO55 -and Esters in the A3-Cyclohexene Series with malonic acid was_carr~Zd out in pyridine containing a slight amount of piperidine, at 20 110 . To compare the reactivity of the aldehydes containing several double bonds in conjugation to the aldehyde group, the condensation of the above aldehydes was carried out under the same con- ditions. The presence of these bonds in the initial aldehydes was found to promote the reaction (Ref. 1). Aldehyde ~I), e.g.p yielded 18% acid, while aldehyde (II) gave 63%. The aldehyde (II) used for condensation was a mixture of its isomers and gave acid W-0, as was to be expected, in two isomeric forms, one crystalline and the other liquid. This was the only case of isomerism among the acids synthesized. On condensation with malonic acid under the same conditions, the aldehydes (III) and (IV) gave many resinous products and very small amounts of the-acids (VII) and (VIII). Better yields-(56-70%-were only obtained under milder conditions. Esters of these acids were also prepared. Contrary to published 0data (Ref. 2), the polyenoic acids reacted at low temperatures (-10 - 0 C) with the calculated amounts of diazomethane, giving good yields. The double-bond system remained unchanged in this reaction. The methyl eaters (IX - XII) Card 2/3 Synthesis and Investigations of Alicyclic ~S/079/60/030/011/016/026 Polyenes. II-.. The acid (VII) (n - 3) and its methyl ester (XII) are analogs of the vitamin A acid and its 6ster. Except for the acids (VII) and (VIII) (n - 4), which resinify, the acids can be converted into their acid amides. Data on the UV absorption spectra of the acids and eaters synthesized are listed in Table 1 and the two figures. They are in good agreement with data published for analogous polyene chains (Ref. 2).
