ABSTRACT: Eight rabb*its weighing between 5 and 6 kg each were subjected to inhalation
of air containing 6 to 8% oxygen for the purpose of clarifying how the early bioelec-
trical manifestations accompanying the development of conditioned reflexes are altered
by the vegetative changes elicited by hypoxia. Bioelectrical activity was recorded
with embedded electrodes, using leads from the cerebral cortex, the hippocampus, and
occasionally from other subcortical structures. Respiration was registered by means
of thermistors. The animals were conditioned to a visual stimulus during eXDosUre to
low-oxygen (6% to 8%) atmospheres. The typical sinusoidal rhythm appears in the hip-
pocampus during the firs'. reinforcement, and the respiration curve becomes flat.
During subsequent reinforcements, the hippocampus shows'a variegated electrical pat-
tern, with slow (5 to 8 cps) waves alternating with high, fabt waves. When the con-
ditioned reflex is evoked, the slow sinusoidal pattern recurs in the hippocampus, fol-

lowed by similar activity in the hypothalamic and the occipital leadz. Respiration
increases in response to the conditioned visual stimulation, the onset of increased
oxygen consumption being accompanied by appearance of 30-cps frontal lead activity.
The slow cortical waves observable in the course of subsequent hypoxic periods appear
to be the result of conditioning. The first 100 sec after elicitation of the reflex
are marked by bursts of high, fast waves interspersed with the basal activity. These
bursts (also thought to result from conditioning) consist of particularly conspicuous
electrical activities of the hypothalamus and the hippocampus. The characteristic
hippocampic sinusoidal waves appear for only a few seconds after presentation of the
conditioned stimulus. After that, desynchronization sets in and respiration shows
conditioned changes. The sudden increase in metabolic rate is accompanied by an
orientation reaction, with motor, respiratory, and EEG signs. Orig. art. has: 13

ABSTRACT: In different animal species, the conditioned autonomic and EEG responses
evoked by indifferent (optic and acOU5tiC) stimuli coupled with inhalation of air
with 6-10 per cent oxygen content have been studied by recording the oxygen consump-
tion, body temperatuxe, respiration and electrical activity of the neocortex and of
different subcortical structures. The early signs of the autonomic conditioned
response and the bioelectrical manifestations associated with it have been analyzed.
The autonomic responses were found to be identical with or reciprocal to the effect
of the unconditioned, hypoxic stimulus. The EEG patterns were indicative of the
conditioned character of both types of autonomic response. (Origo art@ in Engel

TITLE: Study of the fluorescence characteristics of the rhod4mi-ne
series
SOURCE: Zhurnal fizicheskoy khimii, v. 39, no. 11, 1965, 2643-2649
TOPIC TAGS: dye chemical, fluorescence spectrum, quantum yield
ABSTRACT: Investigations were conducted on spectral characteristics
and fluorescence yields of twenty samples of a rhodamine dye series at
20 and -1960C and the lifetime of T in the excited state. It was found
that a relationship exists in the rhodamine dye series between the ab-
solute fluorescence quantum yield and the position of the corresponding
fluorescence bonds and changes in the structure of the respective com-
pounds. A definite relationship was established for all compounds be-
tween the lifetime of the excited state and the position of the corre-
sponding fluorescence bonds. The probability of the direct radiation-
less conversion of the excited molecules is associated with the spectral
characteristics of the compound. The authors express their gratitude

In the case or chronic perforated duodenal and gastric ulcer primary resection is
advised If the general condition of the patient Is good. If the time since the per-
foration does not exceed 6 hr. and if there is no peritonitis. The size of the per-
foration and thetvolume of the escaped fluid are important factors in the choice of
a method of treatment. Suture of the perforated early ulcer. especially in young
patients, often results in complete recovery.

In order to study the relationship between ulcer disease and gamtritts, .1 histologic-
al examination was made of excised antrum partis trom 71 resected stomachs. The
results were compared with clinical data. The histological examination showed
antrum gastritis in 50% or gastric and 43.2T6 of duodenal ulcers. Although it is not
admissible from the small number of cases to draw definite conclusions. the re-
aults are compatible with the literature and show that gastric ulcer is more oftea
accompanied by antrum gastritis than is duodenal ulcer. hi gastric ulcer the fre-
quency of gastritis appenrs to be independent of the length of the past history; if)
ulcer cases of several years' duration gastr itis was not less frequent than in
cases of many decades' duration. On the other hand, gastritis in callous ulcers in
the proximity of the pylorus (situated in the antrum) was more often observed.
From this observation it could be deduced that the secondary peripheral gastritis
which surrounds the ulcer should be distinguished from ulcer gastritis. No dis-
/ 7Z> /
tinguishing connection could be established between gastritis and acid values. The
inflammatory infiltration of the mucous membrane does not appear to influence the
function of the gastric g)ands.

Experiments were conducted on rabbits to determine the effect of
petroleum cracking products -- gasoline, kerosene, and cracking resi-
diies -- on the animal organism. The products were applied cutaneously
to the outer surface of the ear In doses of one milliliter to one kilo-
gram of body weight. The experiments established that the cutaneous
application of the products produced local changes In the skin as well
as:modifications in a number of internal organs. Local changes were
marked by byperplastic and inflammatory manifestations. The general
effect on the animals was marked by intense emaciation and finally
death. Of the internal organs, the liver and the sexual organs were
affected severely. No concerogenic effect was noted. (U)

TITLE: A Photographic Method of Determining the Rate of Flow in Open
Water Streams (Metod opredeleniya raskhoda vody v atkrytykh
potokakh fotografirovaniyem)
PERIODICAL: Sb. tr, Novocherkass. inzh.-melior, in-ta, 1955, Vol 5,
pp 131-137
ABSTRACT: The method of determining the rate of flow described in the
article employs air tracer-integrator bubbles released from a
pipeline or hose, placed along the wetted perimeter of river
bed or channel with a given alignment, which are then photographed
upon their emergence at the water surface. The tracer bubbles
are discharged from holes made in the pipeline at different dis-
tances up the stream. The entire operation comes down to photo-
graphing the tracer emergence lines and determining the full-
scale area F of their emergence contour. The latter is computed
from the formula F = FIG , where F' is the area of the photo-
graphic image area lying between the fixed alignment and the
Card 1/3 emergence curve of the tracers and C is the scale coefficient.

Aostract: Experiments were conducted with 22 healthy dogs. Brain
isch, emia was caused by reducing the blood flow to the brain; dur-
ing a 60 to 120 minute experimental period there were no signir-
icant changes in the concent',ration or Na and IC either in the blood
in the peripacral veins or in the venou3 blood taken from the
confluens sinum. During the i3chomia a temporary increase or
tue systemic blood pressure was observed; this resulted in a fil-
tration diuresis, acconpanied by sodium and potassium diuresis.

'Subjective Rating of Fatigue"
Zagreb, Arhiv za Higlieng Rada i-Toksikolorlill. Vol 17, No 3. 1966, pp 275-290
Abatracti After being subjected to a static strain as a result of holding a
7.17 kg weight for 30, 60, 90, 120. 150, and 180 sac, persons on whom the
tests were performed rated their feeling of fatigue on an arbitrary scale.
At the same time, the effort of four active muscle groups was daternined
clectromyographically and then summed up. The subjective degree of fatigue
as a function of the duration 91 of t4p static effort could be expressed by
the equation t = 0.0048 (V - 30")-L, >* representing the average result,
while the effort measured 9n the electromyograph corresponded on the average
to EKG = 0.0051 ( 91 - 300).L, 51. Individual variations were expressed in
deviations to the same extent from the general curves for both 4' and EHF.

studied the photodielectric effect in phthalocyniLlhe., WALAUB 11D ond Or est tbor;-
oughly studied organic semiconductors. Phthalocyanine layers were produced by sub-
limation in vacuum on a quartz plate on which a semitransparent platinum electrode
was deposited beforehand. The second electrode was aluminum sputtered over the
phthalocyanine. 7be layers were illuminated with focused white light from an incan-
descent lamp at an incident energy 1.2 mw/mm2. The investigations were made in a
vacuum 10-9 - 10-4 = Hg at room temperature and consisted of determining the capaci-
tance and the dielectric loss as functions of the frequency and of the illumination.
Comparison with theoretical calculations shows that the photodielectric effect in
phthalocyanine is of the second kind (illumination changes bath the capacitance and

the conductivity). 7he tents were made at field intensities for which Ohm's law was
not obeyed. The value obtained for the specific conductivity of phthalocyanine in
darkness agreed with the published data. It is deduced from the observed increase of
the dielectric loss in darkness that the increased conductivity is due to an increase
in the carrier density. This report was presented by Academician As X. Terenin.1.0c-
