ABSTRACTz The Dresent method for producing cogged wheels leads to
blisters in the cast due to the sand of the mold, In the
article, a method is described in which an inserted coa-.-
ing is used in the molds. Wheels of 860 mm in diameter
and a weight of 255 kg have been produced by this method.
As a binding material for the coating, liquid glass is
used, The inserted coatings are shown in Figure 1, b.
Air holes are made for the escape of the gases formcd dur-
ing casting. After casting, the inserted coatings are re-
moved by a pneumatic hammer, There were no casting defects
in the finished products. There are 2 sets of diagrams and

TOPIC TAGS: radiation polymerization, resin, polyester plastic$ polymer arose link-
ing, thermal stability, hardness
ABSTRACT: The authors study the possibility of polymerizing unsaturated polyesters
under the effect of high-energy radiation and compare their radiation and thermo-
chemical cross-linking. Several structurally different polyesters were investigated:
polyglycolmaleinate adipinate (PNAD), polyglycolmaleinate phthalate (PNP) and poly-
glycolmaleinates modified by cyclopentadiene (PNC) and anthracene (PHA-2). The speci-
mens were poured into ampules at 90-1000C with evacuation to remove air bubbles, after
which the ampules were sealed. The specimens were irradiated on a UKP-30,000 instal-
lation with a Co60 radiation source. Exposure was done at a rate of 2020-2400 rad/sec,
with total doses ranging from 1 to 140 mrad at a temperature of 18-25*C. A ferrosul-I
fate radiation monitor was used with an error of 2%. As the radiation dosage is in-
creased, the specimens are gradually converted from rubber-like pale yellow products
to completely transparent uniformly hard brown blocks. The hardest cross-linked speci-

,men was PNP followed by PNC, MAD and PNA-2. The hardened polyester resin with the
Ihighest thermal stability was PEC followed by PHAD, FNP and FNA-2. The experimental
Idata indicate significant advantages in the radiation method of croso-linking for

Republic of Bulgaria
PERIODICAL: Khimicheskaya, promyshlennost', 1959, Nr 7, pp 640-642 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The present paper is a detailed description of the develop-
ment of the Bulgarian chemical industry between 1944 and 1959-
In 1952 the Chemical Kombinat imeni I. V. Stalin producing
nitrogen fertilizers was built at Dimitrovgrad. In 1957 a
superphosphate factory was built. These tvio factories caused
the mineral fertilizer production to rise from 1573 tons a
year in 1939 to 400,000 tons a year in 1959. The enterprise
"Agriyall in Plovdiv was renovated and equipped specially for
the production of poisons. In the Metallurgical Kombinat
imeni G. Damyanov a shop for the production of copper sulfate
was established. In 1954 the Soda Factory imeni Karl 111arx near
Varna started production. The production of aniline dyes was
1000tons a year in 1958, i.e. 25 times the 1939 production.

the wood-working industry was organized and in 1958 reached
1500 tons. Tanning matter extract output rose from 237 tons
a year (1951) to 1200 tons a year (1959)- By using the
products and waste products of new factories it proved possi-
ble to manufacture numerous chemical products which had pre-
viously been imported. In 1958 the total output of the chemi-
cal industry was 18 times that of 1939. The large chemical
plants were built according to Soviet plans. Particular im-
portance was attached to the training of highly qualified chem-
ists. A department of chemistry was established at the State
University. In specialized institutions of higher learning
for the training of chemists there were 1000 students in
1959- 1"he present state of the chemical industry does not yet
meet the requirements of the various branches of the economy.
The Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party in
its January plenary session established a program for the
development of the chemical industry during 1959 - 1962 - 1965-

Inter alia, a considerable expansion of the production of
mineral and nitrogen fertilizers is envisaged. A factory for
the production of pesticides will be built. The production
of protein nutrients for livestock breeding as well an of
sulfuric acid and soda products will also be stepped up. The
productiol of organic substances will be expanded. According
to Soviet plans a petroleum fractionating plant will be built
to start production 1963. In 1962 a polyvinyl chloride~(factory
will be inaugurated. In 1965 the total phenoplast production
will be 30,000 - 40,000 tons a year. In 1962 the construction
of a staple fiber and rayon mill working on the basin of
purified beach cellulose will start. This mill is intended to
produce 25,000 tons a year by the end 1965- Furthermore,
a polyamide and polyacrylonitrile fiber~plant in to be set
up. The lacquer and varnish industry w-111 be expanded and the
output of formaldehyde renins will be raised. For a further
development of the Bulgarian chemical industry the asnistance
of the Soviet Union by long-term loans, furnishing of plans
/4 and blueprints, supply of equipment, and training of S._ecialists

Abstract The best specimens were found to be those made
from a mixture of Lozenska and Troyansko qua-r-
tizites (specific gravity 2.37, compression
201 kg/cm2). According to the data listed the
Dinas thus obtained meets the specifications of
Grade II Gost USSR. As a result of the work the
conclusion is arrived at that quartzites of Lo-
zenska. mountain, particularly in admixture with
Troyansko quartzites, can be utilized to est-
ablish the manufacture of Dinas in Bulgaria,
where it has not been produced hitherto.

Wide showers consist of 2 parts: electron-photon shower developing according to
laws of classical cascade theory and extensive periphery formed by particles of
another origin. Shower particles (electrons and photons) can appear in quantity
at greater distances than according to present cascade theory. Submitted 17 Jul

Akad. Nauk S.S.S.R. 67, 45(1949)) have shown that measurements of extensive atmospheric
showers were in complete disagreement with the cascade theory; at distances of about 1
km between recording instruments, coincidence numbers were dozens of times higher than
those calculated; the shower's "trunk," composed of high-energy electrons, was also
much wider than expected. These discrepancies were qualitatively explained by Zatespin
by assuming extensive cascades of high-energy nuclear disintegrations. However, in
the present authors' opiniotj at high altitudes (3860 m) where these investigations took
place, all these pictures are too complicated to permit clear interpretations. Ac-
cordingly, they undertook similar experiments at sea level, where the filtering end sort-
ing out of components is more advanced. The general result was a confirmntion of pre-
vious findings on the abnormally wide areas covered by the showers. ~breover, a clearly
defined difference is manifest between processes in the vicinity of the shower's center
( 25m from center) and those taking place in its wide peripheral parts. Whereas in
the center cascade multiplication of electrons obeys the classical theory, some other
mechanisms are at work in the periphery. These latter are probably not linked with any
nuclear cascades; possibly electrons in equilibrium with mesons are involved.

In Doklady Akad. Nauk S.S.S.R. 74, No. 3(195C) a setup has been described
whicE, at distances 0 not exceeding 60 to 7; m between two pairsof counter
groups, registered only the electron-photon component of the extensive showers;
at greater distances particles bblonging to the "nuclear efiscadell were, pre-
sumably, responsible for the coincidences observed. This setup was used again
in a systematic work, in Moscow- D varying between 2 and 40i7i m The mapnitude
determined was the expone_7~:~ the spectrum formula N( p) = ~/ p K, where N
is the number of showers whose densities p exceed a given value, and A and k
are altitude-dependent paremeters. 'While increasing slowly at distances D 70 m,
k increases rapidly beyond that distance up to D = 17) m, then remains unchanged
until D =,400 m, thus confirmin- the as-umption of two diffr-rent mechanisms
at work in the center and at the periphery of an extensive shower. The larger
values of k were found to coincide with those os the exponent in the enerey-
spectrum formula of the primary rays; this coincidence may not be accidental;
it may reflect some feature of the peripheral mechanism.
