ABSi'.RACT- lion-concentric coatings on electrodes cause formation of a
"shield" on the electrode and frequent interruptions of the
electric are in the welding process. The known devices for
control of coating permit only checking of ready electrodes.
The article gives a detailed description of a new telemetering
device - designed by the authors - for checking the concentri-
city of coating on electrode rods made of tcagnetic metal. The
device consists of an electromagnetic indicator and an am-pli-
fier which are shown in photographs, a drawing and an electric
diagram. The excentricity of coating can be seen on galvano-
meters placed on the amplifier. When the excentricity exceeds
the permissible value, the press operator can adjust the Bet
Card 1/2 screws fixing the position of the gaging bush in the press

ABSTRACT: Laboratory and field tests on reflaing of magnesium by exposure to vaporo of
titanium tetrachloride were carried out In steel or titanium crucibles and employedmetal
containing hmm 0. 027 to 0. 032% Fe and 0. 002% 91. Results Indicate that Utanl ~Ml4ruclbles
reduce Fe to it level of 0. 005 to 0. 007% and St to trace quantities at a magnesium consumption
factor of 2 to 3%. Steel crucibles required higher consumption (3 to 5%). Observations of the
~+Mnge in the quality of magnesium during reduction yielded results which are given In Table 1.

TM,-% At the end of 1957, the Chelyabinakiy metpllurgleheskiy zavod (Chel-
yabinsk Metallurgical Plant), in cooperation with the TsN1IChM introduced a new
techncl-.-gy for producing UIX15 (ShKhl5) grade ball bearing steel, applying lower
temperaturer for the liquid metal (before pouring 1,530 - 1,5500C instead of 1,56)
- 1,59000. This improved the quality of the metal as regards non-metallic in-
ol~ieions. Pburing was carried out with skin-formation at the metal surface when
the Ivwer third of the ingot mold was filled. However, the new method increased
the surface defeats of the new metal producing distortJons on the ingot, flaking
and cracking In the rolled product. The rate of rejects due to surface defects
in the metal poured at 1,530 - 1,5500C was 1.47% as compared to 0.21% of the con-
ventional metal. When the causes of these surface defects were investigated It
'was found that the distortions occurred mainly in that part of the Ingot %hich
corresrorded to the reduction of the metal flow speed during pouring for the pur-

pose of skin formation. To eliminate these surface defects it was decided to put
wooden frames in the ingot molds and to fill the lower part of the ingot mold
rapidly, then slowing down the pouring speed and increasing it again when filling
the upper third of the Ingot mold. The use of wooden frames reduced the percent-
age of rejects due to surface defects to 0.08% as compared to 1.47% in metal
poured without wooden frames. The new method has been applied also for trans.-
former steel and it was possible to reduce the percentage of surface defects In
this steel from 2.5 to 0.5% using wooden frames in the Ingot molds.

ABSTRACT Along the western slopes of the Verkhoyanak Mountains deposits of dia-
bases and of diabasic porphyrite have been found. The investigations of the
deposits in the southern part of the Verkhoyansk Mountains along the West-

draw the following conclusionat The diabases of the western part of the
Verkhyansk Mountains are of effusive oriein.and according to their age they
belong into the Triassic period. The Triassic diabases of this area show a
certain similarity to the effusive formations of the Siberian Platform. The
author of the paper under review is of the opinion that all characteristic
suggest a genetic relationship of the diabaaes of two regions, namely the
correUtion of the Triassic diabases of the western slopes of the Verkho-
yansk Mountains and of the formation of the Siberian Platform.
