A diagnostic system based on electronic computer MUL-2
has been developed by the cyborno4vics laboratory of the reporting
association. This system is applicable to any disease and consists of
a imemory of accumulated medical experience and a logic syst-em which
conpaxes the symptoms of a given patient with symptoms and s~mdromes
--a the memory. Congenital'heart defects are used as an exarmple. Two
aundred symptoms and the 50 most common surgically correctable
anomalies are stored in the memory. A punched card is prepared for

each case history showing symptoms and their frequency. To establish
a diagnosis, the card is fed to the computer and the symptoms are
compared with the information in the computer memory. If the symptoms
coincide with syndromes In the neinory, the computer gives the disease
name as the diagnosis. If the synptoms do not coincide with any
syndromes, then eaoh symptom is compared ~,rith the 200 s7rqptoms in the
memory. All impossible diseases are eliminated leaving 5-6 possibili-
ties. The correct diagnosis is thon found by probability logic with
-nathematical conversions of the relative weight and freqvoney of each

zymptom. Diagposes for 200 cases over the past 2 7rs have boon 80-9C,'
correct depending-on type of congenital heart defect. This diagnostic
"Ystem. is a dynamic process with the computer indicating when addition-
al data is needed. The patient is subjected to fewer tests and Ithe
computer can make the final diagnoses in cases which ordinarily would
require heart eatherization, This diagnostic system is applicable to
any disease and oan also be used for prognosis in serious traumatic

Abstract : In the production of WH by the ferrite method,sodium
ferrite is formed in the case of a sufficient partial
pressure of C02 (PC02) (greater than PCO2 in the atnos-
phere) according to the equation Na2 CO3+ Fe203 Na2Fe204
+ CO2 - 38.83 kcal/g-mole/ PC02 over
the mixture of Ka CO and Fe 0 increases with rising
temperature and,,a~ 8320,reacgel the atmospheric pressure.

It has been ascertained by laboratory experiments on
sintering of Na CO 3 and. Fe20 that increase in reaction
velocity with rising te'viperaLre, at least up to 10000,
conforms '--b a parabolic curve. With stoichiometric pro-
portions of the components,the reaction velocity decrea-
ses gradually with increasing duration of heating; ex-
cess or deficiency in any of the components results in
increasing reaction velocity, by -1-7 tines in t1E maxi-
mal instance (4-fold excess or deficiency in Na2('03).
However, in ouch a case the yield of ferrite is decreased
by,-_/0.8-0.6 times' Fe20 produced by decomposition of
Na2Fe204 with water, on 2ntering with soda is considera-
bi~ more active than Fe 20 that has not been previously
a component part of ferrize. Data are presented on the
use of different samples of Fe 203

A digital'ifidicator in which electroluminescent thin films are used as
illuminators is described. In Fig. 1 the design of a single plate (1) of the

is deposited on the face of the plate. If there is a set

J is actually a plane capacitor, one plate of which is a
transparent current -conducting film (usually SnOd deposited
on the face of the plate. A layer of the phosphor
(30-100 v thick) mixed with the dielectric is deposited on
the surface of the transparent film. The second electrode,
I coated with current-conducting paint and a graphite emulsion,
is made by vacuum evaporation of silver, copper, and
aluminum. Activated by an electric field applied to the
capacitor plates, the elect rolunine scent layer emits light,
