TITLE: The use of pulse counters for measuring the correla-
tion coefficient betwaen the excess threshold level
and a random signal
PERIODICAL: Radiotekhnikaj, no. 6,, 1961, 40 -44
TEXT: In analyzing the threshold system it is of interest to be
able to determine the correlation coefficient between the excess
of a given threshold le'vel at predetermined intervals and the in-
coming signal. The problem usually reduceB to that of determining
the autocorrelation coefficient of pulse amplitudes which would
operate the threshold normalizer. In the pres-wnt article the au-
thors analyze one of the related methods of measurement. The ana-
lyzed quasi-periodic pulse repetition rate with arbitrary amplitu-
des and a known repetition period T p is denoted by "*qp and the re-

petition rate having the same period by cp , The probability of ex-
p
cess threshold x0 or, in other words, the probability of occurrenoe
of event i = 1 is denoted by P, i.e. P(i = 1) = P. The probability
of the opposite even i = 0 will thus be P(i = 0) = 1 - P. For a
stationary process the probability of events i as a result of re-
petitive Tqp (x) is equal to the probability of events j resulting

the distribution law of P (i, J; k) of a Bystem of quantities (x,

The authors conclude that in order to determine the correlation
coefficient p C between the pulse amplitudes which produce excess
threshold and operate the installations it is necessary to measu-
re the following: 1) The average repetition frequency F 11 (k) of
paired states ij = 11; 2) The average frequency F1 at which the

threshold circuit operates and 3) The repetition frequency of peri-
odic pulses Fp. The above measurements can be done using averaging
pulse counters. The block diagrams of the installatik-i for detec-
tion of paired states kj = 11 at any interval kT p and that of coun-
ters 0 for measuring frequencies Fllj F, and F p are shown in Fig.
3. The storage of information, produced by consecutive ones and
zeros corresponding to the operation and cut off of threshold cct
(Thr), is assured by applying the information to a register. The
register consists of series connected t4riggers Ti + Tn and at its
input are applied pulses of the analyzed repetition ratecp qp which
pass through ihe threshold. These pulses are simultaneously applied
to the input of counter C 1 for measuring frequency Fi. The measure-
ment of repetition frequency of paired states Fil is done at the
output of the coincidence circuit consisting of switchea S 1 and S2

ce, all three frequencies can be measured by an averagl~g counter,
such as e.g. type MCC (ISS). As an example, Fig. 4 shows the nor-
malized autocorrelation function p(T) of pulse amplitudes trigger-

Abstract Sterogenol - a cationic purifier of Hungarian manufacture
is recommended in the form of aqueous solution for the
sterilization of hands and mouth arsaa pre-operatively,
materials used in stomatology for the preparation of im-
pressions, materials for suture. It does not corrode
the nozzle or needle; the solution vhich r In in the

"Chemical Sterilization of Synthetic Materials."
Budapest, Magyar Sebeszet, Vol XVI, No 2, May 1963, pages 118-120.
Abstract: [Author's German summary] The author developed a procedure
for the sterilization, without heat, of tubes, threads and plates
made from various synthetic materials. The articles are soaked in 5
per cent sodium hypochlorite solution for 4 hours or in 20 per cent
formaldehyde for 1 1/2 hours. They are then taken out with a sterile
forceps, rolled in sterile gauze and kept no longer than 24 hours. If.
the instruments are used immediately, the soaking solutions must be
rinsed off with sterile water. 12 Western, 2 Hungarian references.

may also be used in field work, and to comparable in accuracy to Winkler's semi-

and also considered suitable for comparative studies and for the continuous can-

performed easily. For rough evaluation whict, allows a continuous control of the

tion is achieved in 20 minutes, whereby the volum
of liquid taken for sterilization must not exceed
one liter. The same effect is obtained by dry
heating for 120 minutes at 1600C, at 170 C for
90 minutes. The tindalization (heating to 1000C.
for 3 days in the raw) insures sterility only in
the case when the pH of the solution is in the acid
range (pH 2-3), and the destruction of spores
appears as the result of physical (heating) and
chemical (acid) actions.
